After revealing new promos for the film, Disney has given a new update onZootopia 2out ofD23. The firstZootopiawas released in 2016, making over $1 billion at the box office. The studio followed that up with a series of shorts released on Disney+, but it wasn’t until February 2023 that they confirmed thatZooptopia 2was in development.
With a little over a year until the film releases,Disneyhas shared a first look at the upcoming sequel during the D23 Entertainment Showcase panel, for whichScreen Rantwas in attendance. Check out the first image below:
In addition to sharing the first look at the sequel, the studio unveiled new details about the movie, including that it will introduce reptiles, who hold a shady past connection to the titular city. Nick and Judy are tasked with a new mystery by a new character namedGary the snake, voiced byLokibreakout Ke Huy Quan. Check out the first look at his character below:
What Zootopia 2’s First Look Says About The Sequel
In addition to the look at the new characters, a clip of the forthcoming movie was revealed,wherein Nick and Judy arrive at a water-based town that includes hippos and beavers. Nick refers to the location as the Marsh Market, which seems to be where they’ll be gathering information early in the movie. The film’s newest announcement also includes returningcharacters fromZootopia, including Mr. Big, Clawhauser, and Flash the Sloth. This means there will be plenty of new and old elements to look forward to in the sequel.
The originalZootopiamostly focused on mammals, with the predator and prey elements of the story taking center stage for its primary conflict. However, with reptiles now added to the mix, it appears the film will be broadening the world in new, interesting ways not previously seen in the first one. While it’s unclear how this new development will tie into Nick and Judy working together as cops for the first time onscreen, the big case they have to solve could show just how synchronized they are after so long.

Since the ending of the first movieteased there would be plenty for Nick and Judy to do as cops,this upcoming adventure might be their biggest challenge since officially becoming partners.While there’s no way of knowing where their new investigation will take them, Gary’s involvement might make the themes and attributes of the story much deeper than they appear on the surface. With plenty of possibilities in store for the sequel,Zootopia 2could wind up being just as memorable and thematically resonant as its predecessor.
