Summary

Will and Spirits are both important to collect inBlack Myth: Wukong, but it can be remarkably easy to miss collecting some of them accidentally. While perhaps not entirely necessary, givenhow difficultBlack Myth: Wukongcan be, it is arguably best to always make sure the Destined One is as well-equipped to face the game’s challenges as possible. Fortunately, the Destined One’s journey can be made a little easier in this regard by making sure to do one simple thing during gameplay.

There are plenty ofpowerful spirits to collect inBlack Myth: Wukong, each of which offer their own advantages in combat. Naturally, it can be extremely satisfying to turn a former foe’s strength and abilities into an advantage, and the transformations offered by Spirits are a perfect method for doing so. Similarly, while it is somewhat easier to build up through grinding, Will is also an important resource for both purchasing items and Cultivate Spirits. As such, it is clearly advantageous to have as many Spirits and as much Will as possible at all times.

Black Myth: Wukong Review: The Soulslike Action Hype Train Is A Little Off-Rails

Despite the exceptional qualities of Black Myth: Wukong, the souls-like RPG has some necessary improvements to make, for a truly immersive experience.

The Wandering Wight Spirit Can Be Missed In Black Myth: Wukong

Players Must Backtrack

In order to collect Spirits, the Destined One’s gourd must first be upgradedby meeting with a Wise Master partway through Chapter 1, who turns it into a Blessed Gourd. The Blessed Gourd can both capture the spirits left by defeating certain enemies and absorb bright green wisps of Willfound floating in select locations throughoutBlack Myth: Wukong’s map. However, the Destined One will have already passed several of these wisps by the time he meets the Wise Master and, more importantly, one Boss whose spirit can be collected: the Wandering Wight.

The Wandering Wight poses a steep challenge for the Destined One to overcome in Chapter 1, especially when he is first encountered while traveling through the Forest of Wolves. In most cases, the Destined One will likely move ahead to gain a few more levels first, but it is possible (albeit very difficult) to defeat him upon initial discovery. The latter scenario will see the Spirit appear but be unobtainable without“guidance,”according to the game. In either case, the Destined One should double back in order to collect the Wandering Wight’s Spirit.

Progressing too far in the game, specifically by fighting the secret boss Elder Jinchi, causes an undefeated Wandering Wight to despawn until a New Game+.

Alternatively, if the Wandering Wight has been defeated but his Spirit has disappeared, the Destined One can collect his Spirit by visiting a Shrine and selecting the “Retrieve Spirits” option. This ensures it cannot be permanently missed. In the case of the Wandering Wight, this is particularly important as the spirit can later be used to break through a wall in the Valley of Despair to find the Loong Scales, themselves the key to meeting several secret Bosses (although it should be noted the same wall can also be broken during a boss fight which takes place there).

The Blessed Gourd Also Gives A Valuable Boost To Will Collection In The Early Game

It’s Worth It To Backtrack For Extra Will

Meanwhile, the large green wisps of Will found throughout the game will initially dissipate if the Destined One attempts to collect them, leaving him with only a small amount of Will to add to his total. Fortunately, the Blessed Gourd changes this, allowing him to go back and gather such wisps in their entirety. This naturally leads to a large amount of Will being collected, which again synergizes perfectly with collecting Spirits, making it well worth tracking down those wisps located in the earliest stages of the game.

Black Myth: Wukong Final Boss & Ending Explained (In Detail)

Black Myth: Wukong has a confusing story up to the very end. Here’s what happens in its final chapters, depending on choices and completion.

Although Cultivate Spirits does require other rare upgrade items, each stage of cultivation requires a large amount of Will. This cost alone can quickly become prohibitive, so the infusions of Will from these large wisps are hugely beneficial. Of course, Will has plenty of other applications, such as its role as currency in the game, from crafting armor to buying useful items. But in any case, no matter how one chooses to spend it, it is clear thatthe more Will the Destined One has, the better.

Although the Blessed Gourd’s purpose is made clear as one progresses further intoBlack Myth: Wukongwith it, the game does not give a direct prompt to return to its earliest areas with the improved Gourd in hand. As a result, it is possible to miss out on obtaining both valuable Will and the Wandering Wight Spirit (with consequences of varying degrees of severity depending on other gameplay progress). Nevertheless, by simply doubling back when the opportunity presents itself, the Destined One is able to easily avoid missing anything that may come in useful later on.
