How Will Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2 Fare Without Kevin Costner?
Why It Might Not Be The End Of The Line For John Dutton
FromYellowstone’s opening episode, John has been a key figure in the story. Though other members of theYellowstonecastwould step up in later seasons and play larger roles, John’s story remained a core part of the show’s identity. After months of reports regarding behind-the-scenes issues and disagreements between Costner and Sheridan,Costner finally confirmed earlier this summer that he would not be returning for season 5, part 2.
Initially, this meant that the Sheridan show would be concluding without its lead character. A surprise recent report, however, claims thattalks of aYellowstoneseason 6are underway at Paramount with Rip and Beth eyed as lead characters. While this report hasn’t yet been confirmed, if true, it would mean thatYellowstoneseason 5, part 2, won’t necessarily have to wrap up John’s story without ever actually showing the character on screen.

Even if season 6 doesn’t happen, theYellowstoneuniverse is set to live on in the form of various spinoff shows, includingThe Madison, which will star Michelle Pfeiffer, Patrick J. Adams, and Matthew Fox.
All 6 Upcoming Yellowstone TV Shows & Spinoffs Explained
Even though Yellowstone is coming to an end soon, creator Taylor Sheridan has many other Yellowstone spinoffs and sequels in the works.
It’s still possible that John will be killed off-screen in some capacity in the upcoming batch of episodes, butit’s now also a possibility that Costner returns in a potential season 6 to bring closure to his character. John’s absence will certainly be a loss forYellowstoneseason 5, part 2, but it will also give new characters a chance to shine, potentially opening the door for some surprising story developments. It remains to be seen whetherYellowstoneseason 5, part 2, will really the end of the road, but some major Dutton family conflicts are evidently on the horizon.
