Summary
AsX-Mendebuts a new generation of young mutants, Marvel just introduced one of the franchise’s coolest costumes yet. InUncanny X-Men #1,Rogue’s new superhero teamdiscover a quartet of mutants on the run, begging for protection. These new heroes, nicknamed the Outliers, are the latest ‘class’ of young mutants trained by Marvels' heroes, with each possessing a unique new power.
AsUncanny X-Men #1enters its second printing, Marvel has released a new cover by David Marquez, as well as data pages sharing info about the heroes. While Calico, Deathdream and Jitter all have powers we haven’t seen before in the franchise, perhaps the most interesting Outlier is Valentin Correa, aka Ransom, pictured on Marquez’s cover with his black bandanna-mask pulled down.

Ransom’s mutant power is that his heart functions like a black hole, allowing him to absorb matter.Marvel’s data page for the hero specifies that he was kidnapped as a child, but escaped after realizing he could absorb his captors' bullets, becoming stronger in the process. Ransom isjoining the Uncanny X-Men alongside Jitter(whose hyper-focus powers allow her to learn new skills in no time at all), Deathdream (who can commune with the spirit world), and Calico (whose psychic connection with her horse Ember allows both to transform into new elemental forms.)
I Think We Just Learned Which Comics Era the MCU Will Base Its X-Men On
As Marvel moves key characters and themes into place, it’s becoming clear the publisher sees a specific X-Men era as the future.
Uncanny X-Men’s New Class Have Excitingly Unique Powers
InUncanny X-Men #1, Rogue new team of mutants come across the Outliers - young mutants who are being pursued by a terrifying being known as ‘Mommy.’ Despite the fact that Rogue’s team weren’t intending to stick together, fans know that they’ll unite to train the young mutants, with Rogue taking on Professor X’s prior role as the main protector of mutant kids. A bonus page inUncanny X-Men #1, gated behind a QR code, shows a glimpse of the future, with Ransom tying off his mask while Jitter and Deathdream battle mutant hero Monet, and a mutant who could be Calico sobs.
Ransom’s ability to absorb matter has some fascinating implications, especially since his heart is literally a black hole. That suggests his powers won’t stop at consuming bullets, but that he should be capable of ‘eating’ light and sound. Ransom’s costume hassimilarities to DC’s roguish antihero Grifter, and Marquez’s cover forUncanny X-Men #6(above) suggests he’s less than happy to be under the X-Men’s care.Having lived most of his life on the streets of Buenos Aires, Ransom has a lot of experience looking after himself, and it will be interesting to see how he forms relationships with team members like Wolverine and Gambit, who have been through similar experiences.

X-Men’s new class of mutants are a fascinating addition to the franchise, with Marquez’s new cover forUncanny X-Men #1showing them in action for the first time. Hopefully, Ransom’s characterization lives up to his awesome powers and costume, asX-Menkicks off its ‘From the Ashes’ era with these creative new additions.
Uncanny X-Men #1is available now from Marvel Comics.
