The young mutants can be seen in a new preview thatMarvelhas released for the series' second issue.One of these children, a boy named Hotoru, possesses a disturbingly terrifying power rarely seen in mutantkind.

Meanwhile, the remains of Xavier’s School have been taken over by a mutant-hating scientist, Dr. Corina Ellis, who intends to use the school as a prison and experimental laboratory designed to capture and study young mutants. However,this new generation of Uncanny X-Men possesses new levels of power capable of changing everything the world expects from mutantkind.

Hotoru aka Deathdream possesses the unique power to transfer between states of living and undeath. After having died as a baby, then brought back to life, his mutant abilities seem to have latched onto the experience, giving the young mutant the ability to simultaneously exist in life and the afterlife. In his death state,Deathdream can summon the souls of the deceased and whatever powers they may have had in life.So far, inthe history of the X-Men, only one other mutant, a woman named Wicked, has had the necromantic mutant ability to summon spirits from beyond the grave.
The power over death, something the likes of Thanos have spent lifetimes trying to achieve, is an extraordinarily powerful one that the teen must come to master.

From the brief glimpse into Deathdream’s profile, revealed in the preview forUncanny X-Men#2,it’s hard to say how extensive his necromantic powers are, how powerful his evocations are, whether he can travel to Marvel’s many realms of the afterlife, or whether he is considered immortal or not are still mysteries. What is for sure is thatHotoru has quickly become one of the X-Men’s most promising, and interesting, young mutants.The power over death, somethingthe likes of Thanoshave spent lifetimes trying to achieve, is an extraordinarily powerful one that the teen must come to master.
Uncanny X-Men’s Newest Mutants Have Promise
While the events ofFall of Xare considered a controversial move on Marvel’s part by much of theX-Menfanbase, it has served as a chance to introduce a new generation of mutants with the narrative space to stand out without the distractions of major plot developments. Of the new generation,Deathdream is definitely the most promising mutant for both fans of the classic New Mutants and the supernatural half of MarvelComics. Time will tell where theUncanny X-Menwill take these futureX-Menand whether Hotoru will become as obsessed with death asThanosis, but it’s certain to be an exhilarating and heartbreaking ride.
