Summary

Evilstar Katja Herbers sheds light on why her character doesn’t kill Leland in the show’s last episode. In the closing stretch of the Paramount+ supernatural horror series created by Robert and Michelle King,Leland heads to a silent retreat with his rival Sister Andrea. However, Leland’s fate intheEvilseries finalecould have been much more gruesome before Kristen’s friends intervened.

In comments toPEOPLEfollowing the series finale, Herbers talked about how David and Ben saved Kristen from having to kill Leland and explained thatthe murder would have weighed on Kristen, regardless of whether he deserved it. She also mentioned that Kristen had killed someone before, referring to Orson LeRoux. The quote is included below:

Katja Herbers as Kristen holding baby Timothy in Evil season 4 episode 3

“I think what they [David and Ben] do is very sweet. They prevent her from having to do it. We know she [Kristen] has killed before. She killed a man who certainly deserved it, one could say, because he was trying to kill her family and nobody was doing anything and he was a serial killer.”

“You could say that it’s justifiable that she kills him, but I think killing is not good for the soul. Even if you kill someone who deserves it, even if you kill a rapist, murderer, whatever, it cannot be good for you. And we’ve seen Kristen, that whole second season, dealing with the reckoning of that she had killed someone — and it is hard on the soul.”

Evil Season 4 Sets Up An Intriguing Leland Story That It Can’t Explore

Leland Was Trying To Save Kristen… Sort Of.

It is explored, to a relatively small degree, that Leland might have some small redemptive qualities. Even though the plan from Leland’s superiors was to kill Kristen years ago,he has been protecting her out of some twisted sense of affection. That lasts until he’s pressured by his superiors to put an end to Kristen, which would also conclude the brief exploration of a different side to Leland.

But that different side proves intriguing. By the process of remote viewing into one another, it’s teased that Leland and David essentially infected one another. David grows a little darker and is quick to violence, whileLeland, for his part, becomes softer. In an amusing scene, he finds himself weeping to cute animal videos online. He then attempts to course correct by watching videos of angry brawls.

Is Timothy The Antichrist In Evil Season 4? The Evidence For & Against Explained

On the Paramount+ series, Evil, baby Timothy is meant to be the antichrist. Is he really? Leland thinks he is, but Kristen and Ben aren’t so sure.

Because ofEvil’s cancellation, the show had to provide some closure to the central dynamic between Kristen and Leland. But if there ever was an opportunity for the supernatural horror to return, it might be fun to see Leland try and fail to do good. He would likely never be thought of as one of the good guys, but there could be fun in seeing his halfhearted attempts to be a better person.
