Summary

A major character absence inIndustryseason 3 has been explained by the star behind the role. The British-American co-production follows the rivalries and alliances of the ambitious fresh-faced staff at the London investment bank Pierpoint & Co. There are quite a few members of the cast who have appeared in every season, including Marisa Abela, Myha’la Herrold, Harry Lawtey, Conor MacNeill, and Ken Leung. However, whenIndustryseason 3premiered on August 11, one glaring absence was David Jonsson’s character Gus Sackey, who was a major presence in seasons 1 and 2.

GQrecently sat down for an interview with Jonsson, during which he explained his absence fromIndustryseason 3. He revealed that he made a “deliberate” decision to join the show in the first place, as he had turned down several television offers in the past in favor of remaining in theater. While he loves the show and its fans,he feels that as an up-and-coming actor, one needs to “spread your wings a bit.“When asked if he would consider returning to the show, he said “I just do one thing at a time.” Read Jonsson’s full quote below:

David Jonsson as Gus looking surprised in Industry season 2 episode 5

Oh, well, I think if I’m honest with you, a lot of it boiled down to scheduling. Let me just be very, very clear: I love that show, and [before it] all I did was theatre. It was very deliberate. I got some offers to do TV, and then the first show that I actually really wanted to do was Industry, and then we did it, and it becomes its own thing, and it has its own fanbase, and I love that. And the people on it, I love — they’re my real friends. But I think it’s also quite important as an actor, especially a young one, y’know, you’ve got to spread your wings a bit. You’ve got to try new things.

As much as I love Gus, I had to… It’s very easy, isn’t it, for people to just see you as a character, and then you move through your career, and people go, that’s — yeah, it’s that character. And I’m like, no, no, that’s not the kind of actor that I am. So as much as I loved it, and I think it was down to scheduling, I think it’s important to do new things, and that’s what this is. [Would I be open to returning on a future season?] I dunno. I dunno. We’ll see. I barely know what I’m gonna have for breakfast, mate. I just do one thing at a time, and hopefully it works out. So we’ll see.

Was Leaving Industry Season 3 The Right Move For Johnson?

If Jonsson’s goal in exiting the HBO show was indeed to explore his range as an actor outside the limitations of a single role on a popular series, he has already accomplished that goal and then some. The actor has begun to build out a robust film career sinceIndustryseason 2 concludedin 2022, beginning with the 2023 romantic comedyRye Lane, in which he starred oppositeClass’ Vivian Oparah. The movie was a critical success, earning a Certified Fresh score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and later being nominated for two BAFTA awards.

Rye Lanewas nominated for Outstanding British Film of the Year and Best Leading Actress (for Vivian Oparah).

His follow-up feature, which is also Certified Fresh with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% at the time of writing, is poised to be a commercial success as well. Jonsson joined theAlien: Romuluscastas Andy, the android brother of the main character Rain, who is played by Cailee Spaeny. The Fede Álvarez movie is the latest installment in the iconic science fiction horror franchise that kicked off in 1979 with the legendary Ridley Scott classicAlien, taking place between the events of that movie and its 1986 sequel,Aliens.

Alien: Romulus Timeline - When It Takes Place Compared To The Other Movies

The ninth installment in the Alien film series, Alien: Romulus, has been released 38 years after the first movie, but it makes the timeline confusing.

Jonsson is attached to a variety of other post-Industrymovies that explore a wide range of genres and characters. However, the most notable is theStephen King adaptationThe Long Walk, a dystopian tale being helmed byHunger Gamesfranchise director Francis Lawrence. With so many movies under his belt already, it makes sense that he would be hesitant to commit to returning to the show, however important the role of Gus may have been in launching his onscreen career.
