Theending ofArcaneseason 1allowed Ambessa Medarda, Mel and Kino’s mother, to become a more influential figure in Piltover. The vacuum left by the deaths of Piltover’s council members led the ruthless Noxian leader to exert her power over the city’s more malleable surviving councilors. This led to some big developments inArcaneseason 2, Act I’s ending, from Caitlyn being made into Piltover’s general to hints about Ambessa’s plan.

Ambessa’s plan inArcanelinks to an ongoing feud she has with a mysterious cabal from her home kingdom of Noxus. This group consists of witches with incredible magical powers, withArcaneseason 2, episode 3 revealing more about the rivalry between them and Ambessa. Known as theBlack Rose inArcane, the witches want something from Ambessa that links to both Mel and the former’s other child named Kino.

Arcane Season 1 Revealed Tidbits About Kino
InArcaneseason 1, Kino was the primary reason as to why Ambessa made her way to Piltover. Kino was described as a more diplomatic leader of Noxus which is considered out of the ordinary for the usually ruthless, warmongering kingdom.Regardless of Kino’s temperance, Ambessa revealed to Mel inArcaneseason 1 that she is in Piltover due to his apparent assassination, with Kino thus being instrumental in affecting two ofArcane’s central characters.

Ambessa insisted that Kino was killed due to a war that was brewing in Noxus, and that she traveled to Piltover to keep Mel safe. Mel was skeptical of this given her own strained relationship with her mother, withArcaneseason 2 proving this skepticism was warranted. Ambessa actually traveled to Piltover to gain control of the city and its resources, includingArcane’s powerful Hextech weapons, to combat the group who assassinated Kino, the aforementioned Black Rose.

Arcaneseason 2 developed this storyline even further thanks to Mel’s kidnapping. InArcaneseason 2, episode 3, Mel is taken by the witches of the Black Rose, with Act II delving into what became of her. Mel was revealed to be trapped in a mysterious prison where she found an unexpected cellmate: Kino. Kino reveals the truth about his “assassination,” stating that it was tied to Ambessa’s history. Kino tells Mel that the Black Rose is searching for a child Ambessa sired in an affair that the two former siblings were unaware of.
Mel’s cellmate was not Kino at all, but a manifestation created by the witches to uncover Mel’s powers, leaving his true fate unclear…

It is rumored that this child has powers that the Black Rose wishes to exploit somehow, withArcaneseason 2, Act II seemingly revealing this child is Mel, also explaining how she survived Jinx’s attack in season 1. Shockingly, it is revealed that Mel’s cellmate was not Kino at all, but a manifestation created by the witches to uncover Mel’s powers, leaving his true fate unclear. How this resolves inArcaneseason 2, Act III remains to be seen, but Kino, Mel, and Ambessa lie at the center of this mystery.
