Dune: Prophecyepisode 5 seesDesmond Hart gifting Harrow Harkonnen a small glowing orb, raising immediate questions.Travis Fimmel plays Desmond Hart inDune: Prophecy’scastand the prequel show’s first season has shown him slowly but surely earning the trust of Emperor Javicco Corrino. By episode 5, he’s been fully integrated into the emperor’s palace, with a squadron of soldiers at his disposal and an office. Hart enjoys his position of authority in a quick scene with Harrow Harkonnen, Valya’s nephew.

At this point inDune’stimeline, House Harkonnen is far from the powerhouse it’ll eventually become. Since Valya manages the Sisterhood and has long since abandoned her ties to her family, the pressure is on young Harrow to lead the Harkonnens out of their dark age. Currently, he’s siding with his aunt in the conflict between Desmond and the Sisterhood, and the scene in episode 5 shows him providing some information about the rebels on Selusa Secundus. In exchange, he’s given a small, spherical object.

Why Would He Give Harrow Banned Tech?

While it’s not 100% clear what the object Desmond Hart gives to Harrow Harkonnen is, it appears to be confiscated Thinking Machine technology.Thinking Machines, computers, and AI are banned throughout the Imperiumfollowing the event known as the Butlerian Jihad, thoughDune: Prophecyhas made it abundantly clear that plenty of people and factions aren’t following the rules. The Sisterhood use a secret computer system for their genetic library, and various noble houses have been shown using Thinking Machines, believing the rule should be overturned.

Dune: Prophecyepisode 4’s climax saw Desmond Hart execute several nobles at an assembly on behalf of Emperor Corrino for their use of Thinking Machine technology. After Javicco publicly permitted Pruwet Richese to get away with using a Thinking Machine in episode 1, these violent executions were a demonstration of the Imperium’s strength, showing off Hart’s powers as the emperor’s new weapon. That makes it all the more curious why Desmond Hart would give Harrow a Thinking Machine in return for information.

What The Glowing Ball Really Means For Desmond Hart

Desmond Isn’t Against Thinking Machines

Desmond Hart put on a show in episode 4 claiming to be adamantly against the use of Thinking Machines. However, the fact that he’s willing to give one over to Harrow Harkonnen is an important reminder thathe’s not here to fight off Thinking Machines; he’s here to kill the Sisterhood. Thinking Machine-using nobles and members of the rebellion are just obstacles for Desmond Hart to overcome and gain Emperor Corrino’s trust. Plus, Harrow Harkonnen having the Thinking Machine inDune: Prophecymeans that, at any point, Desmond Hart has reason to apprehend or kill him.
