Similar to character levels inThe First Descendant, every weapon you use has a Proficiency Level you can improve through repeated use. Taking down enemies with a particular weapon will cause your expertise with it to grow as you complete various missions. This will eventually give you access to more upgrades for your favorite weapons alongside other improvements.
Whether you’re using a normal orultimate version of a weapon, you have a Proficiency Level that starts at Level 1 and maxes out at Level 40. You gain Proficiency Levels bytaking down enemies during missions, so this score improves steadily as you continuously tackle quests. Sticking to your best weapons will give you the most opportunities to level them up as you face tougher enemies and bosses.

The First Descendant: How To Get The Tamer Machine Gun
One of the strongest machine guns in The First Descendant that you’re able to get is the Tamer, a weapon with great stats geared toward overwhelming offense.
How To Use Weapon Proficiency Level-Ups
Gain Access To Additional Module Upgrades
Leveling up a weapon’s Proficiency willgive you a greater Module Capacity Limit for that weapon, giving you more room for enhancement items on a particular tool.Modules inThe First Descendantcome in all shapes and sizes, granting passive bonuses to your favorite firearms. These can range from Firearm Attack stat buffs to shifts in your weapon’s damage type to target specific enemy weaknesses.
More upgrades on a weapon give you stronger customization options for a character build, which can be useful as you unlock harder difficulties for missions.Increasing a weapon’s Proficiency Level will also give you a small amount of Mastery Rank XP, giving you new benefits to use in a build as well. However, thisonly applies for the first time you gain XP with a weapon, making it a limited boost gained with new equipment.

Some Mastery Rank benefits include another boost to your weapon’s Module Capacity Limit, which stacks with the bonus provided by the increases to a gun’s Proficiency Level.
More Modules make it easier to take down enemies, which in turn allows you to gain Proficiency Levels faster in a self-sufficient cycle. Farming the same missions for Proficiency Levels with a weapon will gradually take less and less time as the number of Modules increases on a certain firearm. Try tofind a simple mission where you can farm weapon proficiency easilyto speed up this process.

How To Reset Weapon Proficiency
Spend Crystallization Catalyst Items On Different Weapons
You canchoose to install a Crystallization Catalyst into a weapon to gain another Module slot, but this resets the weapon’s Proficiency Level. This sets your firearm back to its first level, reducing the number of upgrade slots back to what it could hold originally. Thankfully, theCrystallization Catalyst inThe First Descendantgives you some extra room that wouldn’t have been there before on that weapon.
Doing this may set you back to where you started, but it also gives a weapon more potential. For example, a weapon that gained 40 Module slots by the time it reached Proficiency Level 40 now has the chance to gain 41 by introducing a Catalyst. Since a Crystallization Catalyst lets you choose what socket you add, you have the creative freedom to decide what this looks like on the weapon you modify.

Keep in mind that Master Rank bonuses from first-time Proficiency Level experience with any weaponcannot be gained again, evenwhen using a Crystallization Catalyst to reset it back to its original state.
Choosing to reset a weapon also means committing to grinding its experience up again to reach its higher potential. It is recommended that you only do this with a weapon whose Proficiency Level you do not mind grinding again withinThe First Descendant’s various missions.
