One of the greatest gameplay changes introduced by theSilent Hill 2remake is its new collectibles, including Glimpses of the Past. Since certain elements ofSilent Hill 2’s story have been rearranged for the remake, Glimpses of the Past serve as nods to iconic locations from the original. Whenever the player finds one, they’ll see a wide, static shot of the location, akin to the originalSilent Hill 2’s fixed cameraperspective, as a brief piano sting plays and the controller vibrates.

Along with Strange Photos,Glimpses of the Past provide an extra goal to accomplish while playing throughSilent Hill 2. While they’re much easier to collect during a NG+ run ofSilent Hill 2, they’re all available during a first playthrough. Whether the reward at the end of the process is worth the effort, though, is up to each player to decide.

What Are The Glimpses Of The Past In Silent Hill 2 Remake?

Glimpses Of The Past Reference The Original Silent Hill 2

Simply put,Glimpses of the Past represent the sites of important events from the originalSIlent Hill 2that have been moved to alternate locations. For example, since James runs into Eddie and Laura at the movie theater instead of the bowling alley in the remake, there’s a Glimpse of the Past located at the bowling alley - a mostly-eaten pizza lying on a table. Since the Grandfather Clock has been moved, the streaks on the wall that serve to indicate it’s pushable in the original game make up another Glimpse of the Past.

There are 26 Glimpses from the Past to collectthroughout theSilent Hill 2remake. They span the entirety of the game; the first one is found at the very beginning, in the tunnel where James has his first Lying Figure encounter in the original game, and the last one is found in the Nightmare Hotel after James views the fateful videotape.

Why You Should Collect All Glimpses Of The Past

A Treat For Longtime Silent Hill Fans

The material rewards for collecting all the Glimpses of the Past inSilent Hill 2is pretty poor: it’s just the “Echoes” achievement/trophy, a gold trophy on PlayStation Network. Doing so doesn’t affect anything inSilent Hill 2’s endingsor gameplay; it’s a completely self-contained and self-assigned goal.

Players will have to find every single Glimpse of the Past in a single playthrough; they don’t carry over into NG+.

If absolutely nothing else, though, the Glimpses from the Past are like Easter eggs for fans of the originalSilent Hill 2. In fact, if a player is trying to run through the remake as though it is the originalSilent Hill 2, going through the same motions required to complete the PS2 version, they’ll probably discover most (if not all) of the Glimpses naturally. This draws attention tothe remake’s smartest change, and serves as a nice little reminder of what made the originalSilent Hill 2so iconic.
