The trailer seems to imply that Mr. Han has already migrated to the United States of America as of the beginning of the story, and may already have Li Fong under his tutelage at that point. Footage from the movie reveals that he eventually approaches Daniel LaRusso to assist him in the young man’s training, explaining thatLi Fong is to Mr. Han what Daniel LaRusso was to his original teacher Mr. Miyagi(Pat Morita).
Morita portrayed Mr. Miyagi in the first four movies, from 1984’sThe Karate Kidthrough the 1994 installmentThe Next Karate Kid, which starred Hilary Swank as a new student of his.
This line in the trailer openly acknowledges the fact that Jackie Chan’s character in the 2010 reboot was meant to be an analogue to Mr. Miyagi. However, he makes no mention of Dre, the prior student who held the same position in his life that Li Fong does now. This does not mean that Dre will not be mentioned in the movie, but rather that marketers are not using that particular connection to the reboot as a selling point. Presumably, given the fact that the same amount of time seems to have passed in the franchise as it has in real life, Dre Parker remains the same age as Jaden Smith, who is currently 26 years old. While the movie ended with Dre still in Beijing,it is possible that he has since moved back to the U.S., as he is past college age and may have decided to return to his home country.
