Today’s Connections Category Hints
JANUARY 25 #594
I found today’s puzzle a little challenging, but I was able to solve it correctly in the end. There are some tricky words because of how they are categorized together. The last two categories are particularly hard to separate. There are some fun words mixed in, butone hint for free is that none of the categories are based on what the words mean. That means you will not be looking for synonyms, making it a little harder to separate each category out.
NYT Mini Crossword: 8 Strategies To Solve It Fast
This tricky little five by five crossword isn’t always as easy as it looks; here are a couple easy tips and tricks to beat your friends' times!
If you are still not sure about what goes whereyou can use the category namesto help you do so. Below that are the full spoilers if you need help filling out a specific category.

LUNCH
RECESS
This category was the first one I got and the easiest to recognize unless you are very familiar with some of the others. Almost everyone ends up in school at some point, and even homeschooled kids would likely be familiar with LUNCH and CLASS enough to look for other school-related words. RECESS can be used in a court context, but the meanings are the same, and HOMEROOM at least sounds like something that would take place alongside the others. Additionally, there are no other “school” words that stand out.
MOGUL
SLOPE
This was also the second category I got, and I still think it’s fairly recognizable. LIFT and LODGE are the words I would associate with a number of different things, but skiing does come to mind quite fast. SLOPE is also a common enough term that it feels pretty recognizable. MOGUL, on the other hand, does not unless you are more experienced. I happen to know it, probably from watching the Olympics, but it was the word I added in last.

The Tiles game for the New York Times mobile app asks you to use various strategies to pair matching visual patterns together to build huge combos.
KARAOKE
TYCOON
This was where things started to get tricky, and I ended up solving this one last. I said the last 8 words aloud to myself, I studied the end and the beginning of each word, and I looked up what GINKGO meant to see if it helped.I wanted TYCOON to be somehow related to theRoller Coaster Tycoonseries, as someone who grew up playing the original one. That being said, I was happy to just select these words at the very end because I surprised myself with the next category.
DENT
POD
I couldn’t tell you how I solved this, as I didn’t really have a reason for why I picked these 4 out of the rest. I was staring at the last 8, having done all the above things, when my brain suddenly just decided that ANGLE, CYCLE, DENT, and POD made the most sense together. I have no clue what instinct kicked in,and I surprised myself more than anyone. I would hope that it’s just seven months of solvingConnectionseveryday, but I have no way of knowing for sure.
