Summary

TheSentinelsmight be deadly robots intent on mutant annihilation, but oneX-Mencosplayhas just turned them into a great accessory for any discerning mutant. There’s a reason that the Sentinels have remained enduring X-Men villains for decades, and this cosplay perfectly demonstrates why the robots have had such a lasting impact.

Cosplay group The Audacity Crew (@theaudacitycrew) made the perfect group cosplay when they posed as Wolverine, Beast and Colossus while flanked by a gigantic Sentinel prop at San Diego Comic-Con. Not only did the costumed fans catch the eye of attendees likePaparazzi Vader, but their costumes even made it on to the officialMarvelInstagram.

Sporting outfits designed after the recent Deadpool movie versions of the three characters, the trio, of which only @josephs_bizzarre_adventure is tagged, are both beset and in awe of the gigantic model Sentinel.

While all three look great, special mention goes to the Beast cosplayer, who has gone the extra mile by dyeing their complete facial hair to match the furry blue mutant.

The Sentinels Loom Large Over This X-Men Group Cosplay

The Sentinels have been one of the X-Men’s major villains from the very beginning when they were introduced in 1965’sX-Menvol 1 #14. The Sentinels were designed by scientist Bolivar Trask to detect and kill mutants. While the first batch of Sentinels were defeated, they’ve come back to haunt the X-men time and again, whether made by a Trask, a government, or self-replicated by the machines themselves. The Sentinels are in part responsible for some of the worst attacks on mutants, from the genocide of the island Genosha tothe dark alternate timeline seen inDays of Future Past.

X-Menvol 1 #14 is written by Stan Lee with layouts by Jack Kirby, pencils by Werner Roth (as Jay Gavin), inks by Vince Colletta and letters by Artie Simek.

While the humans who built Sentinels are a bigger ideological threat than the killer robots themselves, the Sentinels also have a habit of going off script. The dark future glimpsed inDays of Future Pasthappens because, in that timeline, the Sentinels decide that the best way to prevent mutants is toalsoexterminate humanity. The Sentinels have also developed their own artificial intelligenceslike the AI Nimrod, while unique Sentinels like the Master Mold and the Mother Mold (which makes Master Molds) have the ability to build more Sentinels. You can’t keep a bad robot down.

The Sentinels Aren’t Going Away

Thanks in part to media likeX-Men ’97, the Sentinels remain iconic in the X-Men franchise, and that won’t slow down any time soon. Cyclops' team of X-Men are living in a decommissioned Sentinel factory in the bookX-Men(2024). Meanwhile,a newSentinelsminiseriesby Alex Paknadel and Justin Mason is set to launch in October, focusing on a team of enhanced humans going after dangerous mutants as part of a new Sentinel program. As long as there areX-Men, there will beSentinelsto fight, but that doesn’t mean thiscosplaygroup can’t have some fun posing with them.
