Millie Bobby Brown reflected on the fate of her character inThe Electric Stateafter the dramatic ending of the Russo brothers' movie. The story ofThe Electric Stateis set in an alternate version of the United States in the 1990s, in the aftermath of a war between humans and robots. In the Netflix film, Brown’s character, Michelle, teams up with a mysterious robot to search for her missing brother. In addition to Brown, thecast ofThe Electric Stateincludes Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Giancarlo Esposito, and Ke Huy Quan.
In an interview withScreen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier, Brown discusses what she thinks Michelle’s mindset will be after the events of the movie. From the very first scene ofThe Electric State, it is clear that Michelle and her brother, Chris, have a special bond. However, Michelle has to tragically kill Chris at the end of the film. Despite this tragedy,Brown hopes that Michelle realizes that Chris needed to die so that humanity can move on from Sentre’s technology. Read her full comments below:
I hope that she listens to what her brother says. She says, “I don’t want to say goodbye to you all over again,” and he says, “You’ll never have to.” I hope that she understands that this needed to happen to move the planet forward. It’s actually one of my favorite lines from Stanley Tucci, when he’s like, “There has to be sacrifice to move a species forward.” For me, I think that she knows that his death meant much greater than anything that she could have imagined. She was saving humanity, in a way, by doing that, so I hope that she is able to move forward without holding onto the loss of her brother too much.

In the movie, it is revealed thatSentre CEO Ethan Skate kidnapped and imprisoned Chris so that he could use his brain power to run the most influential technology company in the world. After the war between humans and robots, people become addicted to Sentre’s technology, which provides them with an escape from reality. However, Sentre cannot run without Chris' mind, which is why he tells Michelle that she needs to kill him at theend ofThe Electric State. Even though this is heartbreaking, it is the only option if Michelle wants to free humanity from Skate’s control.

AfterMichelle, Keats, and their robot allies win the battle against Sentre during the movie’s climax, the world returns to normal and Skate’s inhumane practices are brought to light. During a monologue at the end of the movie, Michelle tells the world to embrace their loved ones that are with them, rather than using technology to escape reality. Michelle loses her entire family inThe Electric State, but she forms special bonds with Keats and robots like Mr. Peanuts and Herman. However, the film’s final shot teases that Chris could actually return in apotential sequel toThe Electric State.
It’s interesting thatBrown connects Michelle’s decision at the end ofThe Electric Stateto a line from Ethan Skate earlier in the movie. Even though Skate is the main villain in the movie, he is right when he claims that sacrifices need to be made for a species to move forward. Even though it is clear that Sectre’s technology is not good for humanity, Chris needed to sacrifice his life to bring about a dramatic change. As Brown states, hopefully, Michelle can move on after the bittersweet ending ofThe Electric State.
