If theStar Warsuniverse has taught fans one thing, it’s that Mandalorians are built for adventure.Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian rebel artist, has traveled across the galaxy far, far away, but still has many stories to share; an opportunity that is now possible thanks to an upcoming comic series.

Star Wars#1 by Alex Segura and Phil Noto is set to launch on May 7th, 2025from Marvel Comics.Segura and Noto’sStar Warswill be set immediately after the events ofReturn of the Jedi, expanding on the in-continuity stories of the heroes of the Galactic Civil War as they navigate the early days of the New Republic.

Comic book cover: Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, and Han Solo pose together.

As seen inStar Wars: Rebels, Sabine Wren fought in the Rebellion and played a major part in pivotal events that shaped the outcome of the battle. However, after the war, there is a time period where Sabine’s story is either not shown or unknown, which would be a perfect thread for the new comic series to follow.

Sabine Wren’s Story Is Told in Bits and Pieces After the Events ofStar Wars: Rebels

There Are So Many Gaps That the Comics Could Fill

Though the timeline is unconfirmed, the epilogue ofStar Wars: Rebelsis estimated to take place right afterReturn of the Jediand the fall of the Empire. During the epilogue,Ahsoka approaches Sabine Wren on Lothal, where the two share a silent conversation:it’s time to go find Ezra. Sabine’s fellow rebel and Ghost crewmate,Ezra Bridger, disappears into unknown space, taking Grand Admiral Thrawn with him, one year before Luke destroyed the Death Star (1BBY). Ezra voiced faith that Sabine would find him, and Ahsoka’s return to Sabine signifies the start of that journey for Sabine.

The years between theRebelsepilogue andAhsokacreate more questions than they answer when it comes to Sabine that Marvel’s upcomingStar Warscomic series could answer.

Sabine Wren and Princess Leia

Sabine isn’t seen again until the live action Disney+ series,Ahsoka, which takes place between five and eight years after theRebelsepilogue.Ahsokareveals thatSabine trained as Ahsoka’s padawanfor some time, presumably during their hunt for Ezra, but they parted on poor terms, leading to Sabine returning to Lothal and taking up residence in Ezra’s makeshift home. The years between theRebelsepilogue andAhsokacreate more questions than they answer when it comes to Sabine that Marvel’s upcomingStar Warscomic series could answer.

After the fall of the Empire, Sabine’s movements became mostly unknown. Even thoughAhsokaconfirms thatSabine and Ahsoka traveled togetherfor some time, the series still does not provide any backstory about that time, leaving almost all of Sabine’s history from the end of the Galactic Civil War to the start ofAhsokaa blank canvas- exactly the type of canvas an artist like Sabine would paint. Sabine’s Mandalorian nature combined with her sometimes reckless independent attitude always led to Sabine getting herself into situations that weren’t always easy for her to escape.

Sabine Has Encountered ClassicStar WarsCharacters Before and Could Do So Again in the Comics

A Reunion Between Princess Leia and Sabine as Adults Would be Epic

Due to her nature,Sabine would likely be very active directly after the events ofReturn of the Jedi, when Segura and Noto’sStar Warsseries will take place. The timeline of the comic puts Sabine directly in the path of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia Organa. Sabine and Princess Leia meet twice inStar Warscanon: once in episode 8 (“Bounty of Trouble”) of the animated miniseriesStar Wars: Forces of Destiny, and once in season 2, episode 12 (“A Princess on Lothal”) ofStar Wars: Rebels.

AsSabine is not only familiar with Leia, but also knew Leia’s father, Bail Organa, it is not a stretch to imagine that a comic storyline where the two meet again could come into existence. However, since the upcomingStar Warsseries is set years after the women last met, it would be interesting to see what fighting in a war and the maturity those experiences bring to the characters would mean for their dynamic. Thoughboth Leia and Sabineare intrinsically passionate, they were teenagers when they knew each other. The comic could explore what a working or personal relationship between the two would look like as adults.

Bo-Katan Kryze in The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars

One of the most significant events that occurred at the end of the war was the fall of Mandalore, also known as “the Night of a Thousand Tears.” While the timeline is again up for debate, the Siege of Mandalore occurred in the final days of the war before the New Republic established control. As a Mandalorian with family on Mandalore - for whom she fought fiercely in aStar Wars: Rebelsarc - information on Sabine’s involvement in the battle to save her home planet would provide much needed context to who she is by the timeAhsokastarts.

The Night of a Thousand Tears Impacted Every Mandalorian, So What Is Sabine’s Story?

Sabine’s Family Was Still on Mandalore, as Far as Fans Know

Sabine has a close relationship with Bo-Katan Kryze, even trusting Bo-Katan enough to relinquish her own right to wield the Darksaber and unite Mandalore. As Bo-Katan surrendered the Darksaber to the Empire to save what was left of the Mandalorians,it begs the question of whether Sabine was part of this battle.Bo-Katan’s movements during the New Republic era show that she was searching for the Darksaber. Who better to seek it out than the Mandalorian who discovered it and gave it to Bo-Katan in the first place?

Star Wars, Admit It: Bo-Katan Is Overdue for Her Own Solo Series

Bo-Katan has been in the Star Wars universe since 2012, yet never had a solo comic series. It’s high time for the true leader of Mandalore to shine.

As Segura and Noto’sStar Warswill take place right after the fall of the Empire, it will also occur on the heels of the Night of a Thousand Tears, providing a perfect opportunity to expand on this critical event inStar Warshistory through individual Mandalorians. Specifically,a storyline exploring the fallout Sabine personally experienced after her planet fellwould be an emotionally charged beat.Including Bo-Katanto bring the two Mandalorians together would expand on the crushing loss the two experienced after the Siege of Mandalore, particularly after their shared history with the Darksaber and uniting Mandalore.

Though Sabine’s most well-known and pressing mission was to find Ezra, to say a lot happened before she accomplished that mission is putting it lightly. Sabine lost Ezra, continued to fight in a war for the following seven years, disbanded from the Ghost crew at some point, lost her home planet (and possibly family), journeyed with Ahsoka and trained in the ways of the Force in a relatively short span of time. The upcomingStar Warscomic could touch onSabine Wrenand her significant impact on theStar Warsuniverse during her unaccounted-for years.

Star Wars#1is available May 7th, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
