Will The Mandalorian And Grogu Perform As Well As The Mandalorian?

A Theatrical Film Presents New Challenges

The Mandalorian’s success on Disney+ is impressive as it competes with multipleStar Warsand Marvel series, along withPercy Jackson and the Olympiansseason 1, and many other original shows and films. The next challenge will be to see if the ongoing adventures of Din Djarin and Grogu can perform as well in theaters. As thefirstStar Warsmovie sinceThe Rise of Skywalkerin 2019, and the first in a slate of planned films for the franchise in the coming years, a great deal of pressure rests onThe Mandalorian and Grogu.

Other planned films include a story about the beginning of the Jedi Order 25,000 years beforeThe Phantom Menaceand a story about Rey and the Jedi Order 15 years afterThe Rise of Skywalker.

Part ofwhat madeThe Mandalorianseason 1 so successful is that it was an accessible and relatable storythat did not require extensive knowledge of previousStar Warsstories to enjoy or understand it. IfThe Mandalorian and Grogucan return to this template, it will help the film gain more widespread appeal. The Mandalorianseason 3’s endingsets this up well with the Armorer instructing Din to take Grogu on adventures, and the two of them working with Carson Teva to track down Imperial Remnant leaders.

The Mandalorian and Grogucould be about a new adventure in whichthey need to take on the Imperial Remnant without relying too heavily on the events of the series. There will need to be a careful balance of pleasing those who have watched and re-watched every episode ofThe Mandalorianand made it Disney+’s most-watched original show, and those who have a more casual interest in the characters and inStar Wars. IfThe Mandalorian and Grogucan achieve this, its box office performance may match its unparalleled streaming numbers on Disney+.
