As marketing forThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomramps up, the return of a specific boss has been teased, and its reappearance would be over 25 years in the making.Echoes of Wisdomis approaching its release dateof September 26, and Nintendo is slowly revealing details on the newZeldaadventure. It’s most notably going to be the first game in the series to star a playable Princess Zelda, and while it includes someinnovations fromBreath of the Wild, it’s also a distinct throw-back thanks to its return toZelda’s 2D roots.

Echoes of Wisdomwill see Link, a number of other characters, and significant portions of Hyrule itself swallowed up by mysterious rifts. In her quest to save Hyrule, Zelda will be aided by a fairy named Tri, who bestows the princess with a powerful artifact known as the Tri Rod, capable of moving large objects and even creating copies of certain items and enemies.Zelda stepping into the spotlight is a long time coming, and it’ll certainly be a departure from previous games in many ways, but a new trailer has confirmed the princess will embark on familiar dungeon-delving quests, and that means the return of the series' signature boss fights.

Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom May Feature The Return Of Volvagia

Fire Temple Boss In Ocarina Of Time

In some of the final clips in a brand-newEchoes of Wisdomtrailer from theNintendo of AmericaYouTube channel, Zelda can be seen in what appears to be a boss lair comprising a number of platforms in a pool of lava. Emerging from the ground and flying menacingly above is a long, red dragon with a fiery mane. Although the trailer doesn’t provide a name for the boss, it bears a striking resemblance to Volvagia fromOcarina of Time, and even shares similar behavior.

The clips are exceedingly short, and don’t reveal a lot about the fight itself. Zelda jumps between platforms, once landing on what looks like a trampoline, likely an Echo she placed there with the Tri Rod. The dragon circles overhead with a green orb strapped around its neck on a chain. The details of Zelda’s adventure inEchoes of Wisdomhaven’t been divulged, but the orb looks like it could be an item that serves as a reward for defeating the boss.

Volvagia Hasn’t Been Seen In A Zelda Game Since 1998’s Ocarina Of Time

Ocarina Of Time Is Volvagia’s Only Appearance

In the N64 classic – one of thebest games of all time– Volvagia is the boss in the Fire Temple, the second dungeon tackled by adult Link after he claims the Master Sword and spends seven years locked in the Sacred Realm. Known as the Subterranean Lava Dragon, Volvagia emerges from one of many holes in the boss arena’s platform and circles overhead, dropping molten boulders that Link needs to dodge. Volvagia occasionally returns to the lava underneath the platform, where it occasionally sticks its head out to attack, giving players the opportunity to bash the beast wih the Megaton Hammer.

InOcarina of Time, Volvagia is an ancient dragon revived by Ganondorf to protect the Fire Temple and keep Darunia, the Sage of Fire, from awakening.

Despite the drama of Volvagia’s fight, deep in the heart of Death Mountain Crater, it has never been recreated or iterated on, andVolvagia hasn’t had a second appearance in more than 25 years sinceOcarina of Timecame out. Recurring boss fights are aZeldastaple, with Ganondorf and Ganon the most obvious examples. Volvagia’s potential return inThe Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdomwould be a long time coming, and the game’s special mechanics would put an interesting twist on what is already a fairly unique boss fight.
