Having dealt with public scandal after Fyre Festival,Andy’s attitude toward his public perception has changed in recent years. Rather than hiding behind a shroud of anonymity, he’s taken a front seat in directing his next moves. His appearance onThe Anonymousseason 1 proves that he’s not afraid to be himself in any way, even when he has to go undercover in the game. WithThe Anonymousproving he can work under pressure and use his social skills to his benefit, Andy’s making moves. Speaking to Screen Rant about the show, Andy’s excited to re-introduce himself onThe Anonymous.

Screen Rant: I’m curious, what drew you toThe Anonymous?
I think one of the biggest factors of my attraction to doing the show was to really re-introduce the world to the real Andy King. Everybody has a visual of me, a really interesting visual, everything from Fyre Festival. I thought this is the perfect opportunity for me to kind of help change that narrative and get the world to know the real Andy King. I think they were able to do that on the show, or they will be.
Screen Rant: From what I’ve seen, definitely – it was a great re-introduction to you. Your day-to-day life is obviously a lot different than reality TV competition, you have, to my knowledge, not done anything quite likeThe Anonymousbefore. How did you feel your skills in your life as an event planner came into play on the show? How did they translate?
Well, you know – think about it…my meme is being the ultimate team player – America’s team player, that’s the new broadening scope of my new and improved meme. As the ultimate team player, I have the gift of people skills. I’ve got the gift of getting to know people and understanding them quickly. I can read a room like nobody else can read a room. I have a sneaking suspicion that would be a great gift and an attribute on this show. I think everyone will see as the episodes go by that it proves to be true.
Screen Rant: I would agree! I think the people skills were probably surprising to people having only seen you in one context before, it was interesting to see you pivot and put that into play elsewhere.
It was difficult, as I’m sure you can imagine, to go from Anonymous mode to real world mode, and I probably was a lot stronger with the in-person conversations. I’m the kind of person who’s like, pick up the phone and call me, let’s talk about it. I’m not the kind of guy who does[mimes texting]all of this, but it was kind of fun being in Anonymous mode as well.
Screen Rant: I’m curious, since you mentioned you’re a more real-world, face-to-face kind of person, what drew you to Jack Usher as your alliance partner early in the game?
Jack and I walked into the show together, and as it turned out we were actually probably on the same plane out to film. We’re both New Yorkers and I love the fact that he’s a math tutor but also a comedian. As much of the world might know, Zach Galifianakis was one of my first interns and worked for me for a year or two in New York City in the late ‘90s. I went through the world of standup comedy with Zach. That was probably one of the big bonds I had with Jack, he’s amazing.
Screen Rant: That’s incredible, what a connection. I’m curious about your quick reveal – I’m sure people recognized you right off the bat, but do you think staying anonymous about your past if they hadn’t would’ve helped your game, or did you want to be upfront about who you were?
After the last few years since Fyre, the festival usually quickly becomes the big elephant in the room. It just starts to become a heavy thing to carry around. I’m the guy who gets on stage to give a speech about resilience and failure to like, 10,000 people and I just let it out pretty fast. I feel like it just takes the pressure off of me and helps me to be myself. I went through a period of time where some advisors said to never talk about or never tell anyone that you were involved. If someone asks about it, fine, but to never bring it up myself – but I thought to myself, I’m proud that I had the chance to take six weeks and attempt to save the most luxurious music festival in the world. Obviously it didn’t take place. I’m proud that I worked so hard.
I felt like the reveal for me onThe Anonymouswas so important, and I was trying to demonstrate to people that what you see is what you get. I’m Andy King, I’m the ultimate team player, I will doanythingto kind of try to keep the world happy…and I’ll do anything to get the job done, or win. So, let’s see what happens.
Screen Rant: That’s such an interesting way to put it, because I do think carrying a heavy secret around with you in a game where you’re trying to switch between communication modes is probably too tough. Did you feel like switching into Anonymous mode, since it was tough for you, wound up getting easier for you as time went by?
I think so. I mean, think about it – for me, in my life, probably different from most of the other players. There are a lot of backstabbers out there, there are a lot of people who have nothing better to do than to push hatred out there – and that’s not me, it’ll never be me.The Anonymousis described as a social experiment… I lived a social experiment for most of my life. I live that life every day. When you become high profile, people come at you from all different directions. I’ve been blessed, because 90% of people that come at me love Andy King, and then there’s the 10% hater-like people. So, I’m pretty lucky for that and I felt like that was a great attribute to bring into the show.
Screen Rant: My last question for you – without giving too much away, what do you think is the best word to describe the first season ofThe Anonymous.
Ooh, I mean I’d like to say “crazy”…it’s crazy, absolutely crazy.
