Warning! Spoilers forThat ’90s Showpart 3 ahead.
Summary
That ’70s Showseason 4 made a major change to Kitty Forman’s character, butThat ’90s Showhas changed her back. Kitty is among the most beloved characters of the nostalgia-based franchise, and this comes down largely to her various quirks. She is a loving wife, mother, and grandmother—sweet to her core—but this isn’t to say that she’s without sour spots. Some of Kitty’s best moments inThat ’70s Showwere when she was under high stress. However, how she goes about handling this has changed over the years.
During the first fewseasons ofThat ’70s Show, whenever Kitty was stressed out by her husband, in-laws, or teenage kids (not to mention their many friends), she would begin sucking down cigarettes and sneaking away with booze. She was meant to be a classic 1970s mom who did her very best but couldn’t help but resort to smoking and drinking from time to time to cope with the chaos. DuringThat ’70s Showseason 3, however, Kitty’s smoking was slowly fazed out. By season 4, alcohol was Kitty’s only vise, but this has once again changed inThat ’90s Showpart 3.

That ’90s Show Cast, Character & Cameo Guide
Here’s a breakdown of the cast, characters, and cameos of That ’90s Show parts 1 - 3, including the returns of That ’70s Show’s many cameos.
That ’90s Show Reveals Kitty Secretly Started Smoking Again After Quitting
She Is Seen Hiding Away Cigarettes In That ’90s Show, Part 3, Episode 8
Kitty had tried to quit smoking for the first time inThat ’70s Showseason 1, episode 10, “Sunday, Bloody Sunday,” when her mother-in-law came to town. It seemed that she was finally successful at doing so after season 3 when she was no longer seen smoking. However,That ’90s Showpart 3, episode 8, “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” sees Leia and her friends catch Kitty smokingon the back porch. Then, later, Red and Donna discover a pack of cigarettes hidden under her purse.
It seems that Kitty either started smoking again at some point before theevents ofThat ’90s Showpart 3, or she had never really quit at all—instead, only secretly partaking when no one was looking. Regardless,That ’90s Showhas brought back the tightly-wound, ready-to-burst-if-someone-doesn’t-give-her-a-cigarette version of Kitty Forman.

That ’90s Showpart 3 is now available to stream on Netflix.
Kitty Wasn’t The Only One Who Quit The Habit
Kitty trying to quit smoking inThat ’70s Showseason 1 had a bit of an impact on actor Debra Jo Rupp, who later went through the process of quitting herself. The actor quit smoking during the events of season 3 (no surprise), which is why Kitty’s character slowly quit smoking as well (viaCollider). It was a way forThat ’70s Showto accommodate Rupp’s personal decision, but it also worked well as a development for Kitty. Of course, the character falling back on this old habit is also fitting.
It was a way for That ’70s Show to accommodate Rupp’s personal decision, but it also worked well as a development for Kitty.

That ’90s Showhas continuedThat ’70s Show’s old angle with Kitty. She is a wholly lovable character but also deeply imperfect. She is meant to remind audiences of their 1970s moms or 1990s grandmas—liable to fly off the handle and demand a cigarette before calming down and falling back into giggles and sweetness.Rupp herself clearly influenced this character(and perhaps vice versa). So, smoking or non-smoking, it’s as enjoyable as ever to see Kitty on the screen inThat ’90s Show.
