Superman’s Classic S-Shield Gets a Twist as the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen Takes Over as the New Man of Steel
Jimmy Olsen takes on the role of Superman as the new and improved ‘Super Jimmy!’ However, this fifth-dimensional power-up–courtesy of Mister Mxyzptlk–also comes witha major twist to the Superman suit: it swaps out the classic S-Shield for an ‘SJ-Shield,’an obvious nod to the new bearer of the Man of Steel’s mantle, likely standing for ‘Super Jimmy.’ Additionally, the SJ-Shield is prominently featured on the back of his cape. This twist in the Superman outfit perfectly reflects the light-hearted hilarity that has defined Waid and Mora’s run, showcasing just one of the many delightful touches.
Some fans who aren’t caught up onWaid and Mora’sBatman / Superman: World’s Finestrun may wonder how Jimmy acquired his new suit and super status. The answer can be summed up in two words—Mister Mxyzptlk. This fifth-dimensional being, much like Bat-Mite, is apprehensive of Doom-Mite but possesses powers that could potentially rival his. Instead of confronting this new and overpowering villain directly,Mister Mxyzptlk bestows his fifth-dimensional abilities upon Jimmy, compelling the Daily Planet journalist to become the DCU’s sole hope. With his newfound powers, Jimmy undergoes a transformation inspired by his favorite superhero and friend—Superman.

‘Super Jimmy’ Is the PERFECT Upgrade for Such a Classic Albeit Underrated Superman Character
Jimmy Olsen is one of DC’s most classicand long-established characters, debuting inAction Comics#6 in November 1938 in the storySuperman’s Phony Manager. However, it’s worth noting that Jimmy was unnamed in this initial appearance. Therefore, his first official and named appearance in comics occurred inSuperman#13 (1941) by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. Despite being a character rooted in Superman’s early comic history, Jimmy has primarily served as a supporting character. Therefore, Waid and Mora’s decision to place Olsen front and center in the adventures ofWorld’s Finestwith this new power-up is truly giving this classicSupermancharacter the attention he deserves.
