WARNING: This article includes SPOILERS from the Superman & Lois series finale.Fans are finally getting more insight into Lois Lane and Clark Kent’s Arrowverse fates by theSuperman & Loisshowrunners following the twist in theDCTV series finale. While there have been multiplelive-actionSupermanTV showsthroughout the decades,Superman & Loismade history by giving the audience an ending that has never been explored before. Following the defeat of Lex Luthor, Lois and Clark got the most shocking conclusion for a series finale, and the creators are finally opening up on their decision.

In a new interview withDeadline,Superman & Loisbosses Todd Helbing and Brent Fletcher were asked why they decided to display Lois and Clark’s entire life leading up to their death, rather than leave it on a note where it was more open-ended. Once Helbing and Fletcher were told that this was the only live-action Superman property to have ever concluded their story like this, the duo knew that they had to embrace it, sharing the following:

Brent Fletcher: We were told at one point that we were the only live-action show that really got to conclude his story. So we felt that was a real opportunity. For us, there’s so many questions that you have about what it’s like to live that kind of life. We were doingDeath of Superman. That’s what we were going to sell to the audience. But it’s actually a mislead, because the death of Superman doesn’t happen until the end of episode 10, and we felt like it was to show that that was a life well-lived. What are the auspices of a life well-lived? It’s hope, joy, family and good all these things that he is. It was a hard thing to compact, but we felt that that montage could give a little window into that and give a little inspiration. We’re all mortal, and maybe there’s a beauty to our mortality that even Superman faces. So we thought it was kind of a neat thing. It was something that we were excited about, and so we followed that muse.

Todd Helbing:In the history of Superman, he is in a lot of ways immortal, right? He’s gonna live forever. He’s gonna outlive Lois. He’s gonna outlive his boys. But in this version, with what happened to him, he wasn’t going to do that anymore. So it just felt like, instead of having more questions for the audience about, ‘Oh, I wonder what he was like when he was old,’ it’s like, let’s just show it to them. We’ve never seen that. I think it’s really moving in a way that’s unexpected. Those are the best kind of endings.

What Superman & Lois Showrunners' Lois & Clark Ending Comments Mean For The Show

It is clear thattheSuperman & Loisseries finale endingwas something that the show’s team didn’t take lightly, especially as the series was coming to an early end after only four seasons. Given how many Superman stories have been told in live-action, whether on the big or small screens,Superman & Loishad a lot to live up to in the end. The approach taken for the show was also a way to put a definitive end to the show and close the door on any potential series revival down the line, unless it were to be with Jordan and Jonathan Kent.

What works forSuperman & Loisis that, since the very beginning, the writers have never shied away from putting their own stamp on the Superman mythology. From giving Lois and Clark twins to the various takes they had on villains like Lex Luthor and the Mannheims, there has been a lot of originality withSuperman & Loisthrough these seasons. GivenSuperman & Loisalso focused on the titular duo further into their lives, having their life cycle be brought to an end here was more organic than it might have been for otherSupermanmovies and TV shows.
