It’s been revealed that one returning character inStar Wars: Skeleton Crewwas originally supposed to die, but was saved for the sake of this newStar Warsstory. While the majority ofSkeleton Crew’s cast and characters are brand-new to the galaxy, including Jude Law’s Jod Na Nawood and the leading quartet of children, there is one known character who’s set to make a return as one of the story’s antagonists. This character, first introduced inThe Mandalorianseason 3, was nearly unable to become a part ofSkeleton Crew, but thankfully had their fate changed.

In speaking withDen of Geek,Skeleton Crewco-creator Christopher Ford revealed that Marti Matulis' Nikto pirate, Vane, “was supposed to die in Mando.“According to Ford, however, “they loved him, and they let him live, and then we took him.” Because the creative team ofThe Mandaloriandecided to spare Vane’s life, he’s now allowed to become an important part ofSkeleton Crew’s pirate-based story, which has created quite the win-win scenario forStar Wars.

What Vane’s Survival Means For Star Wars

This Is The Perfect Amount Of Interconnectedness

Having Vane survive and be a part ofSkeleton Crewenriches the greaterStar Warsnarrative by adding an appropriate amount of interconnectivity between TV shows, similar to how theStar Warsanimated TV showshave operated over the years. Since Vane isn’t exactly a major character inThe Mandalorianseason 3,allowing him to have a more important role inSkeleton Crewties the two together without making them hinge too heavily on one another. It will also, in retrospect, make Vane’s story inThe Mandalorianeven better, which proves that this is a step in the right direction.

The Mandalorian Has A Habit Of Saving Its Characters From Death

Vane Certainly Isn’t The First

Vane is far from the first character introduced inThe Mandalorianto ultimately be saved from their predestined fate. The first characters to be rescued were Carl Weathers' Greef Karga and Ming-Na Wen’s Fennec Shand, both of whom ended up becoming quite major characters inThe Mandalorianand evenThe Book of Boba Fett, in the latter’s case. This was also the case for the Mandalorian Axe Woves (Simon Kassianides) in season 2, which is why that Mandalorian mysteriously disappears during the events ofThe Mandalorianseason 2 finale while his peers are still active in the story.

Where Does Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Fit Into The Timeline?

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is the next TV show to be released in the franchise, and its place in the Star Wars timeline is quite interesting.

This makes Vane at least the fourth character fromThe Mandalorianto survive their fate, and the second to squeeze their way into another TV show because of it. Of course, in this situation, it makes total sense, becauseit enriches the pirate storyline ofSkeleton Crewby bringing a new yet familiar face into the fold. It’s not as major of a cameo as a pirate likeHondo Ohnakawould be, but it’s still enough to allow viewers to have a recognizable pirate. Ultimately, it was the best decision for Vane to be a part ofSkeleton Crew’s story.
