Summary
Spider-Man’sDazzler-inspired look on Luciano Vecchio’s variant coverThe Amazing Spider-Man#55 may look cool, but thedisco ball-esque suit is obviously not intended crime fighting. That said, however, it does have one potential tactical advantage – shining so brightly that it would make it difficult for the Webslinger’s enemies to see.

All the Dazzler variants released so far are thrilling interpretations of classic Marvel characters, but few are as stupendously attention-grabbing as Luciano Vecchio’sThe Amazing Spider-Man#55 iteration.

Spider-Man’s Codename Gets a Bold New Origin in Marvel Lore
Spider-Man is one of the most well-known superheroes in the world, but his world-famous codename just took on a heartfelt new backstory.
Spider-Man’s New Suit Would Be A Nightmare To Actually Fight In
The Amazing Spider-Man#55 “Disco Dazzler” Variant Cover By Luciano Vecchio
Mirrors are sharp and brittle, making the costume uncomfortably delicate. It wouldn’t survive one punch, as Spider-Man would be stuck dealing with broken glass jabbing into him for the rest of the fight.
Spider-Man isn’t known for being a hero of the night. The uniform on the variant cover ofThe Amazing Spider-Man #55is a different level of flash and camp. Absolutely dazzling, the beautiful costume design is a practical nightmare. Meant to resemble a disco ball, it is to be assumed thatPeter Parker’s costumeis fitted with hundreds of tiny glass mirrors. While there are reflective fabrics on the market, they do not hold the same brilliance as seen in this variant cover by Luciano Vecchio. The viewer is left to assume thatSpider-Man’s new outfitis covered in glass.

This new look is heavily reminiscent of the Spider-Man MK I armor fromWeb of Spider-Man#100 – by Terry Kavanagh, Alex Saviuk, Joe Rubinstein, Bob Sharen, and Steve Dutro.
Mirrors are sharp and brittle, making the costume uncomfortably delicate. It wouldn’t survive one punch, asSpider-Man would be stuck dealing with broken glass jabbing into him for the rest of the fight. While this opens up interesting plots, it is a level of real-worldism that is counterintuitive to the point of the look. Don’t forget that this is a fun variant cover, yet analyzing the practicality of the outfit has merit. As comics toe the line between camp and realism, to forsake the analysis of one quality over the other would be disingenuous. If comics are all good fun, so is analysis.

If Marvel combined the Dazzler’s light powers with Spider-Man’s new light-bouncing suit, they could create a powerful team.
A “Disco Ball” Spider-Man & Dazzler Team-Up Would Rock The Marvel Universe
A Stunning Display
That said, Spider-Man’s new disco jumpsuit holds true to canon utility in at least once sense.Dazzler’s mutant powers manipulate sound into light. This powerful ability includes creating light shows, holograms, and blinding weapons. If Marvel combined the Dazzler’s light powers with Spider-Man’s new light-bouncing suit, they could create a powerful team. If the two join forces, Alison Blaire’s light rays bouncing off of Peter Parker’s glass suit could make it nearly impossible for foes to see, giving the heroes an upper-hand advantage.
It is not to go unmentioned howSpider-Man’s suit honors the design of the 1960s.The cape under his arms is reminiscent of designs popular in Spidey’s early years: the sixties and seventies. The eras of go-go and disco balls. Though his early design, with webs under his arms as gliders, is seen as cheese in the modern day, to see it honored in such a throwback variant cover is beautiful. In an era where all things 1970s are coming back full force – from roller skates to flare jeans – it is amazing to see Marvel Comics taking that in stride. Time will tell ifThe Amazing Spider-Man #55will tie intoThe Dazzlersolo run at all, but the idea of Dazzler and Disco-Spidey teaming up will live on as a genius novelty.
It is worth readers taking a moment to imagine Spidey facing off with numerous enemies, reflecting Dazzler’s light powers back at them to incapacitate the foes. Not only would this be a super cool bonding moment between two heroes, it would also be an epic moment for an artist and writer to explore.Dazzler’s abilities have always been visually flashing; combine that with Spider-Man’s web-slinging abilities, and readers would havea visually captivating literal disco ball in the form ofSpider-Man, combining two classic heroes in an unexpected way.
