The 2025 movie is a live-action update of Disney’s original 1937 classic, which was an adaptation of the 1812 Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the same name and was the first-ever animated feature produced in the United States. This trailer showcases many of the story’s core elements, including the characters at the center of one of the biggestSnow Whitecontroversies. It is unlikely that they are still referred to collectively as the “seven dwarfs” of the original title, but the group in question is given a much closer look in the new footage. Although it was once rumored that they would become a collection of unspecified fantasy creatures of various sizes,the CGI-aided characters do seem to be of a consistent size, though the movie’s contentious deprioritization of actors with dwarfism seems not to have changed.
The new movie’s depiction of the “seven dwarfs” is caught between arguments that the characters should be played by real-life little people and that the inclusion of the characters engaged in offensive stereotypes about little people in the first place.
Another move that could potentially be contentious is the addition of a rebellion subplot. The sequence where Zegler’s character seems to become the face of a revolution seems reminiscent of Universal’s 2012 retelling of the original fairy tale, the Kristen Stewart-ledSnow White and the Huntsman. Ultimately, theSnow Whitetrailer may not prove to sell many new audience members on theupcoming Disney live-action remake. The fact that its deviations from the source material hew close to a poorly regarded live-action predecessor, combined with its questionable CGI characters,could result in the movie performing poorly both critically and commercially. This could put it in line with, or even worse than, the performance of the recent live-action remake of 2023’sThe Little Mermaid, which earned $569.6 million but was a mild disappointment given its massive $240.2 million budget and beloved source material.
