Some decisions have major consequences inAvowed, and if you decidednotto take out the Steel Garrote behind the waterfall in Emerald Stair (or simply didn’t find them), it has major implications for the future of Fior mes Iverno. After leaving Naku Tedek with Giatta, you’ll find that Fior has been razed to the ground and the Steel Garrote are responsible. Afterward, you’ll find Vemas Rogera at the Abandoned Farms, whose nephew was murdered by Captain Carnet, the leader of the siege on Fior. Not only did she gut him, but she stole a family heirloom in the process.
Warning: Story spoilers for Avowed are below. If youchoose to help Vemas retrieve the ring, you’ll unlock the"Debt of Blood"side quest, which is only available if Fior was razed. You’ll have to go to the Ranger Headquarters and find Captain Carnet to decide her fate. In speaking with her, you’ll learn that she killed the sentry because he killed one of her bannermen and her troops deserved revenge. It’s up to you to decide whether it’s worth picking a fight with the Steel Garrote, or if sparing her is a better option, and the choice isn’t as clear-cut as you’d think.

What Happens If You Kill Captain Carnet
Receive Carnet’s Cutlass & A Cash Prize
If you aren’t willing to hear Captain Carnet out, you’re able to attack after a quick conversation, andit’s pretty obvious which options will lead to a fight. You can scold her for being such a zealot and burning Fior, but ultimately these choices will end up in a brawl. Captain Carnet has a few heavy attacks, but nothing unbeatable or dramatically harder than anything you’ve likely faced up to this point. There is a Steel Garrote caster in her crew that will try to freeze you up, but otherwise the fight is pretty straightforward.
Avowed: Should You Kill Haiako & Katoa Or Reason With Them?
During the Don’t Look Down quest in Avowed, you may reason with Haiako & Katoa at the top of the tower - or kill them and take their gear.
Once you defeat her, you’re able to grab theCarnet’s Cutlasssword, one ofAvowed’sunique weaponsthat deals +20% damage against Kith plus either an attack-speed boosting enchantment, or one that restores health and essence. The Rogera Family Ring will be on her body, which you can return to Vemas. He’ll be happy she’s dead, but willconveniently forget about the cash reward unless you remind him, in which case he’ll hand over a decent chunk of change. The ring itself is just a quest item and will be removed from your inventory automatically.

What Happens If You Spare Captain Carnet
No Rewards, But The Inquisitor Will Be Pleased
If you want to reason with Captain Carnet, she doesn’t make it easy. She appeals to honor and duty, claiming that the ring is rightfully hers by Aedyran customs. There are a few options to attempt to reason with her to hand over the ring, but ultimatelythere’s only one choice to get her to hand it over.Otherwise, if you don’t end up fighting her, she’ll keep the ring and you won’t get any rewards from Vemas. To get her to hand it over, appeal to her God with this dialogue choice:
Woedica knows you won. Or is that not enough for you?

She’ll respond by giving you the ring and letting you off with a warning more or less, saying you’re lucky she didn’t kill you for questioning her faith. If you return to Vemas, it becomes clearhe was really out for blood and doesn’t care much about the ring itself. At this point, you won’t be able to receive the cash reward from Vemas, and you will need to either talk him out of fighting the Steel Garrote or leave him to his fate. If he decides to stay, he’ll be present at the Abandoned Farms until things improve in Fior.
You Should Kill Captain Carnet In Avowed
More Rewards & Justice Is Served
The choice is pretty clear-cut as long as you’re not trying to roleplay as an Inquisitor fanatic. From a gameplay perspective, Killing Captain Carnet results in two rewards while sparing her results in zero.Sparing her does nothing of immediate note aside from upsetting Vemasand possibly causing his death, but she will be present in later narrative events. If you kill her, it goes against the Steel Garrote and the Inquisitor, obviously, but you won’t be locked out from siding with the Inquisitor in the future.
Avowed: Should You Destroy The Mines Or Stop Darle?
Once you reach Shatterscarp in Avowed, you’ll have to make a decision about whether to destroy the mines or stop Darle from blowing them up.
Killing Carnet is worth it for the unique Carnet’s Cutlass sword alone, especially if you’re looking for a quick-swinging weapon to dual wield for apossible Berserker build. Overall, there isn’t a good reason to spare Captain Carnetin this situation, given her role in the razing of Fior and the atrocities inflicted upon the locals.

Vemas might be driven by revenge, but it seems justified given his nephew’s fate. Carnet shows little remorse, and she’s undeserving of her awesome sword. If you’re not sure whether to kill Captain Carnet inAvowed, don’t overthink it - just kill her and collect the rewards.
