Warning: SPOILERS ahead for Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros. There were several strongOnyx Stormtheories leading up to the third book in theEmpyrean Series' release, typically revolving aroundViolet’s second signet,Andarna’s seventh dragon den, or the venin. But one of the more obscureOnyx Stormpredictionswas actually spot on — and through one totally obnoxious character, Yarros finally gave readers a bit more information about Violet’s dating history. In bothFourth WingandIron Flame, Violet stated she’d had two relationships before Xaden. In one conversation between the two, she also confirmed that one of her exes was in the infantry.

Onyx Stormfinally saw Violet’s past catching up with her present — in more ways than one — but the most significant reference to her past was the appearance of her ex. The conversation of exes has cropped up before in Violet and Xaden’s relationship, but in the past, Xaden didn’t want to know who they were. This spurred an abundance ofOnyx Stormtheories over the past year, with each suggesting who they believed would be revealed as Violet’s ex. AndOnyx Stormfinally confirmed the most popular theory of them all.

Onyx Storm Confirmed The Theory That Violet Dated One Of King Tauri’s Sons

One Of Her Exes Is Prince Halden

After the conversation between Violet andXaden inIron Flame, there were many who believed that Halden Tauri, the crown prince of Navarre, would be revealed as one of Violet’s exes inOnyx Storm. As Violet’s mom was the General of Navarre, she and her family were constantly stationed close to the King, indicating Violet had a relationship with the royal family. This was also confirmed through Violet’s relationship with Aaric — also known as Cam Tauri, prince of Navarre. And theories suggested there was more to their relationship than friendship, especially after they discussed Halden during the Archives heist.

Onyx Storm Recap: 15 Biggest Spoilers

Between political drama and a quest to track down the seventh breed of dragon, a lot happens in Onyx Storm – and these are the biggest developments.

This theory was also supported by Violet’s insecurity towards Cat and Xaden’s previous history, knowing they are both of royal blood. Violet’s feelings of inadequacy were thought to have stemmed from her own experience dating a royal, something that proved to be true onceOnyx Stormconfirmed she dated Halden. This finally came to light during Violet’s signet sparring session, and during their later conversation, it’s revealed thattheir relationship came to an end once Halden cheated on Violet with his own sparring instructor. Their initial reunion, however, was short-lived, as Xaden intervened once Halden asked Violet on a date.

Violet’s Ex Is The Most Annoying New Character Introduced In Onyx Storm

Halden Almost Jeopardizes This Mission & Gets Them All Killed

After his and Violet’s eventful reintroduction, Halden didn’t ask about dating her again; it seems he learned his lesson after Xaden’s jealous outburst. Instead, Halden led Violet’s mission to find Andarna’s family, insisting that he join them in order to conduct negotiations between the kingdoms. His character proved to be incredibly incompetent and short-tempered, jeopardizing their first mission in Deverelli and nearly getting them all killed. Halden is one of — if not the most — annoying characters Yarros has ever written. Thankfully, he was not used to add a love-triangle element toOnyx Storm’s narrative.

This gave the remaining narrative a much-needed break from Halden’s exasperating character — but it’s likely Yarros is not done utilizing him as a secondary antagonist.

After Halden’s disastrous trip to Deverelli, Aaric stepped in as a royal ambassador in Halden’s place, helping Violet continue negotiations with the Isle Kingdoms. This gave the remaining narrative a much-needed break from Halden’s exasperating character — but it’s likely Yarros is not done utilizing him as a secondary antagonist.Onyx Storm’s ending saw Halden preparing to battle Aretia for their disobedience in allowing Poromish citizens over the border. Therefore,it’s possible Yarros is preparing his character to take on an even bigger villainous rolein thenextFourth Wingbook.
