Summary

Currently, nine Hashira existinDemon Slayer. These brave warriors protect humanity from demon attacks and each one of them possesses a unique and distinctive Breathing Style that they use to accomplish this noble goal. Surprisingly though, there isone too often forgotten former Hashira of the group, who is unfortunately no longer alive in the series, as she perished during a demon attack. This underrated heroine has ties to Shinobu, the Insect Hashira, and their adoptive sister, Kanao Tsuyuri.

Kanae Kochois actually the former Flower Hashira inDemon Slayer. There is no current Flower Hashira, although Kanao Tsuyuri is able to practice the Breathing Style effectively, so Kanae’s craft thankfully did not die along with her.

Shinobu Kocho, Kanae’s sister, and Kanao Tsuyuri, Kanae and Shinobu’s adoptive sister, both mention Kanae at times throughoutDemon Slayerand reference that there was once another sister in the group. However, she unfortunately passed away in a demon battle. Kanae was already dead by the timeDemon Slayerstarted, so her death is a bit mysterious and often brushed over in the story.

Kanae’s Tragic Death Was Traumatic for Her Two Sisters

Both of the Sisters Carry Tremendous Grief After Kanae’s Violent Incident With Doma

Kanae died at the hands of Doma, the fearsome Upper Rank Two demon. One night, she went outside, unaware it would be her last night alive. She unfortunately happened to cross paths with Doma, who promptly engaged her in a fight for her life. The pair battled until sunrise, which confirms Kanae’s great strength and power.Doma is amongDemon Slayer’sstrongest demons in the series, so the fact that Kanae survived that long reveals her skills are quite advanced. Sadly, her demon slaying efforts were not sufficient, and she breathed her last breath while Shinobu held her.

Doma had to run from the rising sun, since sunlight would kill him, causing Kanae to ultimately die a painful slow death on the ground, suffering from blood loss and deep wounds. Shinobu had to witness this horrific occurrence firsthand, unable to save her sisteras it was far too late by the time she located her. This event in the story explains why the two remaining sisters are so passionate about demon slaying, to avenge Kanae and save others from similar fates. Kanae was the oldest and her death shook the other sisters to their core, leaving them grieving even years later.

Even After Her Death, Kanae Helps Her Sisters Become Even Better People

Kanae was an incredibly wise demon slayer and the ideal older sister. She taught Kanao Flower Breathing, her powerful Breathing Style that was fairly effective against Doma. She is arguably the strongest of the trio and, aside from the help of her Breathing Style, she is also an excellent swordswoman, agile, fast, and muscular. Kanaesupported and protected her sisters with her lifeand was one of the most kindhearted characters ever to appear inDemon Slayer, showing love to everyone surrounding her, whether they were deserving of it or not.

Kanae only appears a couple of times in the series, in flashbacks, and even these moments show what kind of person she was. In the Rehabilitation Training arc, Shinobu revealed some information about Kanae’s personality to Tanjiro. Shinobu seems to be one of the peppiest, happiest demon slayers, but deep down she harbors a lot of resentment and anger towards the despicable creatures. She always wears a smile though, attempting to have a merciful outlook towards demons because Kanae did. Ironically, even though a demon was what killed her, Kanae felt bad for demons and their plight of living such a wretched existence.

Shinobu and Kanao’s Hatred of Doma Stems From What He Did to Kanae

They Finally Receive a Chance To Unleash Their Rage on the Demon in the Infinity Castle Arc

All demon slayers obviously share a great disdain for demons, butShinobu and Kanao’s hatred of Doma knows no bounds, and their sister’s death at his hands is the reason why. When Doma and Shinobu first encountered one another, he found her attractive and began to flirt, even playfully asking her to “go to hell with” him. However, Shinobu was repulsed and bluntly insulted him, expressing her disgust that her sister’s murderer would dare consider pursuing her in that way. Throughout the Infinity Castle arc, Shinobu and Kanae were more furious than ever, finally able to bring justice to their sister’s killer.

Kanao’s Rage Helped Her Fight Doma Alone

She Was Able To Push Herself Much Farther Than Normal Due to Her Powerful Anger at the Demon

Shockingly, Kanao, the adoptive sister Kanae saved from a horrific life of abuse, fought Doma alone for hours, putting all of her physical strength into vanquishing the demon. Had it been any other demon, it is unlikely Kanao would have been able to effectively battle alone for so long, but the years of unbridled fury built up in her since Shinobu’s death helped spur her on and allowed her to survive. Knowing what happened to Kanae helps explain Shinobu and Kanao’s emotional states during their finalDemon Slayerbattle with Doma, as well as why they were able to push themselves so far.
