It wasn’t that long ago that DC made a joke aboutBarbara Gordon just being “Girl Nightwing” to Bludhaven residents, butyounger readers may not know that DC actually had an actual female Nightwing, who debuted in 2006. Cheyenne Freemont mades her first on-panel appearance inNightwing#118. Initiallyintroduced as a love interest for Dick, a deeper partnership would formulate after Nightwing saves her life from a fatal encounter with Jason Todd. While the character has not featured prominently in some time, Tom Hoskisson’s female Nightwing character design is a great reminder to readers that such a character already exists in DC canon.
In due time, Cheyanne Nightwing’s sidekick, crafting a costume that was nearly identical to his and solidifying herself as the first female Nightwing. Even before becoming a superhero, Cheyenne was unique fromother characters who donned a Nightwing costumeif only for the simple fact that Cheyenne Freemont is a metahuman. She carried the power of telekinesis, which also made her unique as a member of the extended Bat-Family. Both her crimefighting career and comic lifespan only lasted a handful of issues, as she made her last appearance six issues later, retiring from superheroics in favor of living a quiet life.

In many ways, Freemont was ahead of her time, debuting before the Nightwing Family was official. In a world where they exist, a female Nightwing could be to Dick’s Family what Batgirl is to Batman’s Family.

It was fairly recently during the “Beast World” arc thatanother former love interest of Nightwing’s had made a return, so it shouldn’t be hard to imagine thatCheyenne Freemont could return one day as well. In many ways, Freemont was ahead of her time, debuting before the Nightwing Family was official. In a world where they exist, a female Nightwing could be to Dick’s Family what Batgirl is to Batman’s Family – a hero molded into his image. Even if she doesn’t return,now would be the perfect time to introduce another female incarnation ofNightwingfor the same reason.
