My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #6 had a surprise early release, and it’s great thatepisode #7and beyond will be the same. Episode #6 was the most unique and utterly surreal episode of the series to date, and ifMy Deer Friend Nokotanhas more of that style of writing in store, then new episodes coming out as early as possible are great to see.
My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #6 was structured largely the same as previous episodes with its story divided into unrelated and episodic segments, albeit taken to an extreme that was never seen in the anime before. The usual moments of surreal and otherwise goofy comedy were all present, and it all peaked in the final segment whereMy Deer Friend Nokotanmade Nokotan even more of an enigmatic being than she was before.

It was a truly bizarre episode, even by the show’s standards, thus leaving plenty to be excited about for the rest of thesummer 2024 anime season.

What Happened In My Deer Friend Nokotan Episode #6?
Produced By Wit Studio; Directed By Yuyoshi Aoki
My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #6, “The Summer Deer Festival,”began with 18 mini-episodes in a row, each less than a minute long and an adaptation of four-panel comic strips from the original manga. Some of the mini-episodes were just an exchange of witty dialogue between the characters, but others were spent indulging in the general absurdity of Nokotan’s character. One that stood out, in particular, involved Koshitan and Nokotan selling one of Nokotan’s antlers for club funding, and much later in the episode, it was revealed that Tsubameya was the one who bought it.
In the first proper segment, the school year entered the summer season and the Deer Club discovered Nokotan to be covered in mysterious spots. While Bashame convinced everyone that Nokotan had contracted a disease,Nokotan’s spots were the same spots all deer get after shedding their fur, but for Nokotan, that meant peeling off an entire layer of flesh as if it were a latex suit. Nokotan’s body returned to normal after a timeskip to autumn, the anime even lampshading how uneventful summer was, and Bashame had gotten into the habit of wearing Nokotan’s flesh over her own.

In the final segment, Nokotan barged in on the student council, doing so as Nekoyamada tried to discuss taking down the Deer Club, to show them a bizarre ball of living antlers she discovered buried under the school grounds. Nokotan believed it to be a tsuchinoko, a snake-like creature from Japanese mythology, and even though its appearance and behavior contradicted that, Nokotan insisted on it being a tsuchinoko. Eventually, Nekoyamada was gaslit into believing it to be a tsuchinoko, as well, andthe Deer Club and student council agreed to have joint custody over the creature and name it Tsucchi.
My Deer Friend Nokotan Indirectly Makes Nokotan Even Weirder
My Deer Friend Nokotan’s titular protagonist has always been a bizarre character, and episode #6 somehow took that even further. Tsucchi’s design has blatant similarities to Nokotan’s horns, and with how utterly alien a creature it is, Tsucchi the tsuchinoko’s appearance suggests thatNokotan is a creature who exists beyond the limits of human understanding, which would explain her bizarre biology and why she does so many weird things. It would be on-brand for the show not to follow that up, but if it does, it would be a great way to add some more serialized storytelling to the story.
My Deer Friend Nokotan Delivers On Its Weirdest Episode Yet
My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #6 wasthe weirdest episode of the seriesto date, and it more than made it work. Between the bizarre visual comedy of things like Nokotan’s flesh suit and Tsucchi the tsuchinoko, the rapid-fire gags of nearly 20 mini-episodes, and the continued hilarity of its meta dialogue,My Deer Friend Nokotanepisode #6 has done the best job of showcasing the surreal nature of the series out of any episode yet. TheMy Deer Friend Nokotananime has officially passed its halfway point, and judging by episode #6, there’s still plenty to look forward to.
Be sure to watchMy Deer Friend Nokotanwhen it releases on Wednesday, August 14.
