Legendary game developer Ragnar Tørnquist has just announced Red Thread’s next game, titledHello Sunshine. Tørnquist and Red Thread are the Norwegian developers behind the classic adventure titlesThe Longest JourneyandDreamfall,as well as the more recent gamesDustbornandDraugen. The upcoming game takes on a very different style than the developer’s previous titles, bringing robots and the desert together in an unlikely way.

The intriguing teaser trailer offers a first glimpse intoHello Sunshine, whichsees players embarking on a dangerous trek through a post-apocalyptic desert landscape. The game studio’s newly announced survival game seems to be a mix ofFalloutaesthetics with a touch ofThe Iron Giant. There’s no release date or window yet, but the game is available to wishlist onSteam.

The Teaser Trailer Reveals A Dangerous Landscape Where The Sun Itself Is A Threat

The gritty content of the trailer provides a stark contrast to the game’s title design, which is bright orange and yellow and features a cartoon smiling sun. The cinematic teaser throws the viewer into the middle of a desertlit by a scorching sun that blazes dangerously bright, where a character grabs an empty bottle from a reclining skeleton.

Love STALKER? You Won’t Want To Miss This Post-Apocalyptic Survival RPG, Now In Early Access

This new early access title lets players switch form at will and explore the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone with a sci-fi twist.

As the character crouches behind a large rock for protection from the sun, they throw the bottle behind the rock only toaccidentally awaken a massive robot. The way the robot’s eyes light up before it stands up is very reminiscent of the classic animationThe Iron Giant, except this giant isn’t friendly. A second robot enters the fray to defend the character, ending with the savage removal of the attacking robot’s head. As the character’s savior turns around, the word “FOLLOW” written across the robot’s back prompts them to get up and walk in the robot’s shadow.

The nod toThe Iron Giantseems intentional, with the trailer’s robot even sporting the same rounded head and long arms.Hello Sunshine’spost-apocalyptic environment and inventory screen (seen in a screenshot from Steam, not in the trailer)also seem to be inspired byFallout, with the sun replacing radiation as the ever-present threat to players' health. The title’s announcement is generally being met by excitement from fans of the studio, despite themixed reviews forDustborn, the studio’s previous game.

Hello Sunshine Offers A Unique Survival Mechanic For Fans Of The Genre

Stay Out Of The Sun With The Help Of Your Robot Friend

The trailer introduces what’s set to be the core mechanic of the game: players willfollow in the large robot’s shadow for protection from the sun during the day and scavenge for materials, food, and water after sundown. The game’s Steam description goes into more detail, suggesting that the world is in ruins thanks to the fall of a “corporate empire” and the presence of “machines that refuse to shut down.”

Ragnar Tørnquist is the creator behindThe Longest Journey, a 2000 adventure game that received the coveted “universal acclaim” ranking and 91 onMetacritic, because it’s just a really good game (I may be a tad biased).Hello Sunshinelooks very different from Red Thread Games previous titles, with astrong emphasis on exploration, scavenging, crafting, and general survival. It’s set to be a brand-new adventure, and fans can probably expect a deep story, vast and living world, and genre-defying gameplay.
