Jon Moxley’s spike spotfrom this week’sAEW Dynamitemay have redeemed his feud with Cope (Adam Copeland), butit hasn’t saved his AEW World Championship reign. For those out of the loop,AEW held its annualRevolutionpay-per-viewearlier back on March 9 in Los Angeles. Given how most of the matches played out, there’s a strong argument that it was one of the best events in the company’s history, were it not for the slow, plodding main eventbetween Moxley and Cope.
In what seemed like an effort to redeem both men, a rematch was quickly announced for the March 19 episode ofAEW Dynamite, this time with a Street Fight stipulation. Moxley once again left the arena as champion even as FTR and Willow Nightingale ran out to fend off Moxley’s Death Riders faction, but that was far from the most newsworthy aspect of the match.

How Did Jon Moxley Wind Up With Spikes in His Back?
Late in the match, Cope went to ringside and pulled out a black wooden board with nails sticking out from one of its ends, a weapon he has dubbed “Spike.” Normally, when a wrestler attempts to use a weapon like this, they’ll be thwarted before making contact with their opponent. That seemed to be the case at first as Moxley cut off Cope’s attempt to use the weapon with a Cutter. But, minutes later, Cope caught an unsuspecting Moxley by swinging Spike right into his stomach. He whacked him with the board a second time before suplexing Moxley onto the nails, leaving them lodged in his back.
This is a moment that is hard to watch even for hardcore wrestling fans. The spot was genuinely dangerous even for a deathmatch veteran like Mox. Despite the gravity of the moment, however, Moxley would still go on to win via knockout after getting Spike pulled off of him. The match received much more positive reactions from AEW fans both in the arena and online, thanks in large part to it delivering one of the craziest AEW moments in recent memory.

AEW Should Still Put The AEW World Championship Back On Swerve Strickland
Don’t Let the Spikes Distract You
But for all the buzz the Street Fight generated, it doesn’t change the factAEW’s main event scene has stagnatedduring Moxley’s fourth reign as world champion. It looked like AEW was heading in an exciting new direction when Moxley beat Bryan Danielson for the title atWrestleDreamlast October, unveiling a more sinister version of the Blackpool Combat Club faction with The Death Riders. And while that momentum initially carried over into Moxley’s feud with Orange Cassidy as the two battled over the “soul” of the AEW locker room, by the end of the year it had lost focus.
Adam Copeland Interview: AEW Star Reveals 2025 Wrestling Plans & Confirms Percy Jackson Season 2 Return
AEW’s Adam Copeland discusses his recent return to wrestling, his 2025 in-ring plans, and what’s next for Ares in Percy Jackson Season 2.
Between Strickland (the new No. 1 contender), Will Ospreay, Hangman Page, Kazuchika Okada, MJF, Jay White, and a finally healthy Kenny Omega, there are much more interesting directions to take AEW’s main event scenefor the rest of 2025. But that only starts by getting the world title away from Moxley. The spike spot was fun, but don’t let it trick you into thinking we need six more months of this.
