How Genuine Admiration for the Comics Inspired His Work onSupermanand Beyond

At the time of James Gunn’s surprise appearance on theJim Lee & Friendspanel, Lee was sitting withSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’screative team: writer Tom King, artist Bilquis Evely, and colorist Mat Lopes. After greeting the crowd,Gunn dove straight into shop talk, expressing his deep admiration and love for the artKing, Evely, and Lopes created withWoman of Tomorrow.

It is this kind of passion for the source material that I believe fuels his ability to create exceptional movies…

He went on to continue expressing his admiration:“This is the art form I grew up loving, and the fact that three of you—Tom knows because we’re friends—but I just met you guys for the first time, and it’s so wonderful what you do.I appreciate it so, so much and couldn’t have made Superman [without it].”

Supergirl sits atop the back of Cosmo, a white horse with a red cape. Above her, the stern visages of her parents stare down at her, noble and austere.

Gunn spoke with raw emotion and passion as he addressed the creative team, showing his words came from a genuine place of admiration and love. It is this kind of passion for the source material that I believe fuels his ability to create exceptional movies and TV serieslikeSupermanandPeacemaker, and whyhe will always have a fan in me.

My Excitement for the 2026SupergirlMovie Keeps Growing Thanks to Gunn’s Passion

The passion and admiration Gunn expresses when talking about comics, especially King’sWoman of Tomorrow, makes me even more excited for the upcoming 2026Supergirlmovie.When I first heard that King’s comic would inspire the film, I was over the moon.

In my opinion,Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowis not only one of DC’s best modern-day narratives, but it also blows every otherSupergirlseries out of the water. It gives fans the best portrayal of the character to date, filled with heart while exploring moral complexity, sacrifice, responsibility, overcoming trauma, and self-reflection.

This story completely shifted my perspective on the character. Before reading it,Kara was defined in my mind as“Superman’s cousin.”AfterWoman of Tomorrow,I saw her as so much morethan that: a character and hero in her own right.

I could honestly talk for hours and write essays aboutmy love forWoman of Tomorrow. That’s whyit was fantastic to see the same love and admiration reflected in Gunnduring theJim Lee & Friendspanel. His respect for the creative team and how he used their work as inspiration gives me high hopes for theSupergirlmovie.

A 30-Second Cameo Was All I Needed to Believe in This Adaptation

When I first heard that Gunn was usingWoman of Tomorrowas inspiration for his upcomingSupergirlmovie, I was ecstatic. I also had my fair share of reservations because, to me, King’s comic series is pure perfection.I wasn’t sure Gunn could capture the magic ofWoTwith his own take.I should have known better than to doubt him.

She’s obstinate, rebellious, and most importantly, a total hot mess.

DespiteSupergirlnot even having an official trailer yet, fans still got an epic sneak peek at what’s coming in the final moments ofSuperman, where Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El made a brief and unforgettable cameo. The big takeaway for fans is clear:James Gunn’s version of Supergirl is going to be a complete mess, and I mean that in the best way.

I absolutely loved Kara’s cameo inSupermanbecause, even though it was only 30 seconds long, it gave me a great glimpse of her DCU personality. She’s obstinate, rebellious, and most importantly, a total hot mess. That lines up perfectly with King’s version, where Kara is still working through survivor’s guilt and struggling to find a new sense of purpose.

Gunn also gave a direct nod to King’s comic during that scene, when Clark mentions Kara was on a red sun planet drinking, since she can’t get drunk under a yellow sun. That’s exactly howWoman of Tomorrowbegins. So even from that brief moment, I can already tell that Gunn is going to deliver something amazing forSupergirlfans.
