James Cameron responds to his rumored feud with Roland Emmerich, the former director of theFantastic Voyageremake. Released in 1966, the originalFantastic Voyageis an Academy Award-winning science fiction movie that was directed by the legendary Richard Fleischer and was based on a story written by Otto Klement and Jerome Bixby. 17 years after it premiered, Cameron indicated an interest in directing a remake, but later abandoned the project to focus on others. I’ve never said anything negative about Roland. But anyway: Yes, I’m overbearing. Damn right. When it’s a project where I’ve contributed to the writing, I might actually have an opinion on it. I actually don’t even remember talking to Roland Emmerich about Fantastic. I remember the other directors that we worked with for months on end trying to develop that project. If I talked to Roland, it was for two minutes. I have a pretty good memory and I don’t remember that at all.

It All Comes Down To Fantastic Voyage
During one of the panels at thejust-concluded 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Emmerich shared thathe recently lost interest in directing theFantastic Voyageremakethat has remained in development hell for several years. Emmerich added that he exited the project after Cameron was brought on, describing him as overbearing. He also added that he could not be sure at one point if the remake was his or Cameron’s.
Seeing as Emmerich will likely not be returning to direct theFantastic Voyage remake, it puts the long-gestating project in limbo once again.

This is, however, not the first time that these two directors have not seen eye to eye regarding theFantastic Voyageremake. A few years after Cameron decided he was going ahead with the long-awaited project, Emmerich was one of the directors that was briefly considered to lead the project. Emmerich, however, turned down the opportunity becausehe was unhappy with the script at the time.Other directors who then neared the project included Shawn Levy and Guillermo del Toro.
This Sci-Fi Remake Could Be James Cameron’s First Post-Avatar Movie
It may be hard to guess what James Cameron might direct after the Avatar movies but one exciting sci-fi remake film already seems to be on his radar.
Seeing as Emmerich will likely not be returning to direct theFantastic Voyageremake,it puts the long-gestating project in limbo once again. It is also highly unlikely that Cameron will direct the movie himself, as he seems firmly invested intheAvatarfranchise, which is expected to have three new installments. It will be interesting to see if a new director joinsFantastic Voyagein the coming months, or if Cameron will decide to fit the movie into his incredibly busy schedule.
