Warning! SPOILERS For 1883 & 1923 Season 2, Episode 3, “Wrap Thee in Terror”

1923is at risk of recreating aYellowstonetragedy that lives rent-free in my head. That said, I still have hope for Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar) and Alexandra of Sussex (Julia Schleapfer), the latter of whom officially claimed the Dutton family name when passing through United States customs at Ellis Island in New York in1923season 2, episode 3. Now married, Spencer and Alexandra fell in love in1923season 1, meeting in Nairobi while Dutton was between hunting excursions and the future countess was on holiday to celebrate her engagement.

When Alex and Spencer met, their romance was a whirlwind affair. Alexandra jumped in the back of Spencer’s car as he departed for Tanganyika, hedging her bets on a man she had only just met but was deeply enthralled by, fleeing a loveless engagement. Spencer’s feelings were just as swift, with the hunter proclaiming that he didn’t want to waste time. The beautiful promise between the lovers to spend their lives together, tying the knot in1923season 1, was cut short, making their separate journeys in1923season 2 heartbreaking to watch.

1923 Season 2, Episode 3 Hinders Alex And Spencer’s Chances Of Reuniting In Montana

Alex And Spencer Dutton Encounter Grave Danger In “Wrap Thee In Terror”

While Spencer and Alex each get one small step closer to Montana in1923season 1, episode 3, their chances of reuniting and having a happy ending feel narrower than ever.Spencer has a harrowing encounter on the way to the train stationin Fort Worth, Texas, from the Port of Galveston in the Gulf. While bootlegging liquor for Luca’s (Andy Dispensa) cousin, Spencer and Luca encounter their first roadblock. While Spencer’s caution to risk his life saves him, Luca’s ill-fated encounter shows that Dutton is always just moments away from danger.

Watching “Wrap Thee in Terror,” I considered the possibility that Spencer and Alex would never reunite.

Alex has a similarly harrowing journey as she passes through immigrationin1923season 2, episode 3. She and Spencer’s individual yet equally dangerous and ill-fated journeys contrast the warmth and glee of their romance from1923season 1, making the prospect of their reunion feel light years away. Watching “Wrap Thee in Terror,” I considered the possibility that Spencer and Alex would never reunite. I began to think about how sad it was that Spencer and Alex were separated immediately after marrying in international waters. Their ceremony was a serendipitous and magical occasion, yet they hardly enjoyed its fruits.

Alex And Spencer Could Repeat Elsa Dutton And Sam’s 1883 Tragedy

When I considered Alex and Spencer’s beautiful impromptu ceremony, coupled with their heart-wrenching goodbye and promise to meet up again in the future that may never be fulfilled, I realized that1923season 2 could repeat my least favorite tragedy in theYellowstonefranchise. The tragedy happens in1883,Taylor Sheridan’sYellowstoneprequel about the earliest-knownmembers of the Dutton familywho make a Northwest journey from Texas to Montana on the Oregon Trail. The story follows James Dutton (Tim McGraw), John Dutton III’s (Kevin Costner) ancestor, along with his children, Elsa (Isabel May) and John I (Audie Rick).

Why Elsa Dutton Narrates Yellowstone’s Prequels But Not Kevin Costner’s Series

Isabel May’s narration as Elsa Dutton is perfect for Taylor Sheridan’s 1883 and 1923 prequels but not Yellowstone for one considerable reason.

One of the main draws of1883is Elsa Dutton, the story’s narrator, who has a coming-of-age experience along the Oregon Trail.Elsa falls in love with a warrior named Sam(Martin Sensmeier) in Comanche territory, who she marries after just a few days. However, despite Elsa’s plans, her mother, Margaret (Faith Hill), wants her daughter to complete the family’s journey to Oregon. Obliging her mother, Elsa plans to meet Sam in June when the flowers bloom, and she cries out at him, saying that she loves him in Comanche as they part. Then,Elsa dies before they can reunite.

Imagery from 1923 and 1883

I’m watching parts of1923season 1 (again) and realizing the similarities between1883and1923’s best love stories. Like Alex and Spencer, Elsa and Sam get married in an impromptu moment. They, too, separate just as they begin to enjoy it. With another watch, Alex’s crying out to Spencer off the side of the British liner reminded me of Elsa’s goodbye to Sam. After maybe Elsa’s death,Sam and Elsa’s final exchange is the most tragicYellowstonemoment, if you ask me.1923will make Alex and Spencer’s goodbye just as sad if one fails to complete their journey.

One 1883 Character Gives Us Hope That Spencer Will Survive In 1923

Elsa Dutton Gives Me Hope Spencer Survives In 1923 Season 2

Despite her heartbreaking story, Elsa Dutton is theYellowstonecharacter who gives me hope Spencer and Alex won’t repeat the franchise’s saddest love story. Elsa returns to narrate1923despite her death. Her narration provides a vital clue concerning what we can expect from her brother, Spencer. In1923’s series premiere,Elsa Dutton reveals the following about her family:“My father had three children. Only one would live to see their own children grown. Only one would carry the fate of this family through the depression and every other hell the 20th century hurled at them.”

1923 Season 2, Episode 2 Shows How 1883 Could Have Ended

1923 season 2, episode 2 shows what James and Margaret Dutton’s 1883 ending could have been if things had gone differently for Elsa Dutton.

Elsa appears to be telling us that Spencer Dutton survives. In the first sentence, Elsa references James’ three children, including herself and her two brothers, John and Spencer. Of course, Elsa Dutton doesn’t live through the 19th century, dying in the prequel’s titular year of 1883. Then, Elsa’s brother, John I (James Badge Dale),dies in1923season 1, after Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) shoots him with a Tommy gun. Therefore, Elsa’s remark that one of James Dutton’s children survives through the 20th century indicates that Spencer will live, giving me hope for his and Alex’s1923season 2 ending.
