AlthoughGhostsseason 4 has other characters to follow too, the CBS sitcom’s first major character arc backfired because of a new arrival in the Woodstone Mansion.Ghostsseason 4’s cast of charactersadded a new spirit to the show’s ever-growing lineup.Ghostsseason 4’s Patience, played by Mary Holland, was a humorless Puritan who was kicked out of her colony in the 1600s as she was too fastidiously pious for the rest of the community. Patience was first introduced in season 3, but she only gained dialogue and screen time when she kidnapped Isaac.

Pete’s Ghosts Season 4 Rumor Drama Highlights The Real Tragedy Of 1 Spirit

Although Pete’s dark discoveries about Donna cast a shadow over his powers, this subplot mostly highlighted an underrated Ghosts season 4 character.

Isaac called off his wedding to Nigel and, mere moments later, he was pulled into “The dirt” beneath the Woodstone Mansion by Patience. Isaac soon charmed Patience and eventually escaped with the help of his fellow ghosts, but Sass convinced him to help free Patience to make up for abandoning her beneath the mansion decades earlier. Patience then joinedthe ghosts of CBS’sGhostsfor three episodes, but her behavior proved that Isaac’s redemption arc wasn’t as simple as it seemed. Instead, his first good deed seemed to have caused major problems for everyone else.

Isaac Tried To Be Better But Patience Derailed His Progress In Ghosts Season 4

Ghosts Season 4’s Isaac Redemption Wasn’t As Straightforward As It Seemed

When Patience began her reign of terror in the Woodstone Mansion, it turned out that the duplicitousIsaac’sGhostsseason 4 character growth wasn’t as straightforward as viewers might have expected. ByGhostsseason 4’s hiatus, Patience had objected to Sam’s estranged father Frank sharing a bed with his girlfriend, caused the walls to bleed, and falsely claimed that she turned Sam into a stone statue to scare her fellow ghosts. This final trick proved to be the last straw for Isaac, who tempted her into watching trashy TV with him.

Isaac later threw this back in Patience’s face, revealing that she wasn’t so devout after all in front of all the other ghosts. Mortified by her hypocrisy, Patience retreated back down into the dirt beneath the mansion by the end of season 4, episode 3, “Halloween IV: The Witch.” This plot proved that Isaac’s Ghosts season 4 character redemption wasn’t as straightforward as it initially seemed. Isaac’s relationship with Nigel had already highlighted his character’s complexity, but Isaac’s sly side came in handy in Patience’s plot. Although he did save Patience from the dirt, he also later betrayed her.

How Isaac Needed To Be Conniving To Get Rid Of Patience

Ghosts Season 4 Proved Isaac Is The Show’s Most Complicated Character

By tricking her into watching sinful television,Isaac helped highlight Patience’s hypocrisy and saved the ghosts from being stuck with her for eternity. This proves that Isaac’s conniving side was not only still present inGhostsseason 4’s later episodes, but something that the denizens of the mansion actively relied on. Although he is admittedly far from a straightforward hero, Isaac does tend to do the right thing in the end. However, the ways in which he goes about doing the right thing are often pretty petty, self-serving, and otherwise questionable.

When Isaac saved Patience from the dirt in the premiere and apologized to his former fiancé Nigel in the next episode, it briefly seemed as if his character was undergoing a radical evolution. However, Isaac being more understanding was ironically what unleashed Patience on the unsuspecting ghosts, while his return to acting deceitful and sly was what freed them from her. Isaac trying to be better went badly wrong in season 4, whereas going back to his supposedly bad qualities ended up helping everyone out.

Why Ghosts Still Needs To Bring Back Patience

Ghosts Season 4’s Isaac Storyline Under Utilized A New Character

This proved just how much, even afterGhosts' Isaac and Nigel split, there is still plenty of room for the show to flesh out its most complicated character. To this end,Mary Holland’s Patience the Puritan should return in future episodes ofGhostsseason 4as she has a long history with Isaac, Sass, and Thor. Patience provided a new character for Isaac to bounce off in the season’s first three outings, and it would be interesting to see how he interacted with her if he weren’t so afraid.

Throughout most of Patience’s episodes, Isaac agreed with everything she said out of fear before eventually betraying her to get rid of the specter. This was a funny surprise as it proved his redemption in the premiere had not necessarily fundamentally altered the substance of his character. However, now that the ghosts know Patience isn’t all-powerful and is very fallible, Isaac could develop a more equitable relationship with her. This would be a genuinely redemptive story for Isaac, especially if he could teach Patience how to coexist with the rest of the ghosts and make her a regular fixture inGhostsseason 4.

Ghostsseason 4, episode 6, “The Primary Source,” will air on December 5 at 8:30pm on CBS.
