Summary

An excitingStar WarslinksThe Empire Strikes Backto the upcomingMandalorian & Grogumovie in the coolest way. Instead of an immediate fourth season ofThe Mandalorian, Din Djarin and his adoptive son Grogu are receiving their very own featured movie, one that will see them clashing with the remains of the Empire once more. To that end, exclusive footage has teased a very exciting connection to the original trilogy ofStar Warsfilms.

As seen inD23’s exclusive footage forThe Mandalorian & Grogu, it’s confirmed that Din Djarin will be making good on his deal with the Aldephi Rangers of the New Republic, agreeing to work with them and track down Imperial warlords alongside his adoptive son and apprentice Grogu. This includes an altercation with a collection of Imperial forces and war machines, particularly those who were made famous byEmpire Strikes Back. To that end,an epic newStar Warstheory suggests a very cool Episode V twist for the upcomingMandalorian & Grogumovie.

Everything We Know About The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

The Mandalorian’s story will continue with a Star Wars movie. Here’s everything we know about the project, including cast, release, and timeline.

Din Djarin & Grogu Will Complete A Mission On A Snow Planet

Seen In Exclusive Star Wars Footage

In the D23 footage forMandalorian & Grogureleased during their Entertainment Showcase, Din Djarin and Grogu are seen working together alongside the New Republic, specificallyZeb Orellios from the animated seriesStar Wars Rebelswho made his live-action debut inThe Mandalorianseason 3. A new version of the Razor Crest is set to return as well. However, neither reveal was as big nor exciting as the Imperials Din and Grogu are seen fighting in the newStar Warsfootage.

Taking place on an icy, snow planet, Din is featured taking on an entire squad of Imperial snowtroopers, the implication being that he’s on the hunt for yet another warlord for the New Republic. However, it also seems as though Din and Grogu will be getting far more than they bargained for. After all,the exclusive footage ends with an incredible shot of two massive AT-AT walkers standing directly in Djarin’s path.

This Planet Still Has Plenty Of Imperial Technology

Facing Two Imperial AT-ATs

Riding what looks to be a smaller AT-RT walker down the side of a snowy mountain, one can assume that Djarin and Grogu will be just as surprised as audiences to find these AT-ATs waiting for them below. Furthermore, the simple fact that there are at least two active Imperial walkers at this point in theStar Warstimeline hints at quite a bit about this snow planet. It firstly suggests that the Imperial presence on this world is quite large, one that also has access to a wide array of resources and technology.

Unfortunately, theMandalorian& Grogufootage is fairly brief. Very little context is revealed, like what Din and Grogu’s specific mission is or if they have a backup from theNew Republic Adelphi Rangers. That said, the little that was shown has generated a very exciting idea for the upcomingStar Warsby hinting at a return to Hoth fromThe Empire Strikes Back.

AT-AT Walkers march forward on Hoth shooting blasts in The Empire Strikes Back

The Empire May Have Taken Over The Rebel Base On Hoth

A Clever Location For The Imperial Remnant

InThe Empire Strikes Back, the Rebel Alliance had been operating out ofEcho Base on the ice planet of Hoth. This was following their attack on the Death Star inA New Hope, their victory having forced them to evacuate the Massassi temples on Yavin IV in search of a new secret base.Eventually finding Hoth, Echo Base was formed within a network of ice caves. However, Imperial probe droids eventually discovered the Rebels' location and their shield generator, which had been protecting them from orbital bombardment.

Forced to initiate a ground assault with Imperial AT-AT walkers, the Empire successfully scattered the evacuating Rebel Alliance to the stars, and Echo Base was believed to have been largely abandoned from that point on in theStar Warstimeline. However,it would certainly be a surprise ifThe Mandalorian & Groguends up revealing that sects of the Imperial Remnant returned to make Echo Base their home, a clever spot to pick while also flipping the tables of history where the Imperials are now the ones hiding in the ice and snow of Hoth.

There are certainly other snow planets in theStar Warsgalaxy. However, a return to Hoth would be very exciting, offering some prime nostalgia that would help the film connect with audiences of all ages across multiple generations. After all,The Mandalorian& Groguwill be the firstStar Warsmovie to hit theaters since2019’sThe Rise of Skywalker. As such, Hoth feels very likely, especially after the exclusive D23 footage confirmed the presence of both snowtroopers and the classic four-legged walkers.

This Move Is Right Down Grand Admiral Thrawn’s Alley

Will He Be Working To Unify The Fractured Empire in Mandalorian & Grogu?

WhileGrand Admiral Thrawnhas yet to be confirmed forThe Mandalorian & Grogumovie, having forces hiding out in a decommissioned Rebel base on Hoth does feel like something he would do. Likewise, 2023’sAhsokaseason 1 did end with Thrawn successfully returning to the knownStar Warsgalaxy after his long years in exile. To that end,Thrawn will likely begin working to unify the various sects of the Imperial Remnant under one banner. As such, a confrontation with Din Djarin feels probable, especially considering The Mandalorian’s work with the New Republic to track down Imperial warlords.

At any rate, it stands to reason thatThe Mandalorian & Groguwill lead up to Dave Filoni’s currently untitledStar Warsmovie that will reportedlyculminate all of Lucasfilm’s recent New Republic Era stories. To that end, Djarin and Grogu’s upcoming story will likely involve Thrawn, even if it’s only a mention or a brief cameo appearance. Regardless, the idea that the Imperials perhaps found refuge on Hoth after the Galactic Civil War is a very exciting prospect for the upcomingStar Warsmovie.
