AnotherIce Agemovie has been confirmed by actor John Leguizamo, and the upcoming sequel is already undoing a massive franchise mistake Disney made two years ago. While speaking withNPRon their September 7 episode of theWait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!podcast, the Sid voice actor confirmed another movie in the franchise is in the works. The film would technically beIce Age 7, due to a spinoff,The Ice Age Adventure of Buck Wild, made for Disney+ in 2022. Even so, a future addition to theIce Agemoviesis a major update for the franchise.

The last mainline film,Ice Age: Collision Course, wasanimated by Blue Sky Studiosin 2016. However, the animation studio was closed in April 2021, with theBuck Wildspinoff later produced by 20th Century Animation and Bardel Entertainment. This meansIce Age 6will be the first direct sequel in the series not to be animated by its original studio. While this change is slightly disappointing, given everything fromfunnyIce Agequotesto wild storylines, the next installment can still fix a major mistake Disney made with its spinoff two years ago.

Ice Age’s Buck Spinoff Movie Recast Several Key Characters

The Movie Was Also Critically Panned

The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wildcastsawonly Simon Pegg from the original movie series return to play Buck, despite the appearances of major characters from the franchise. This included new voices for the main trio of Manny (Sean Kenin Elias-Reyes), Sid (Jake Green), and Diego (Skyler Stone), alongside Ellie (Dominique Jenkins), Crash (Vincent Tong), and Eddie (Aaron Harris). The movie also didn’t include an appearance by Scrat, whose side story chasing after his acron was a classic part of every film in the franchise up to that point.

The absence of these well-known voices was part of the reason whyBuck Wildgot critically panned, scoring a 19% critics score based on 37 reviews from Rotten Tomatoes. The movie was also criticized for theabsence of Scrat, an uninteresting story, and shoddy animation. These combined factors make for a spinoff that doesn’t reach the same heights as even some of the less well-receivedIce Agemovies. However, withIce Age 6now on the horizon, the movie appears to be addressing one of these glaring issues already.

Ice Age 6 Appears To Be Bringing Back The Original Franchise Actors

John Leguizamo Might Be Involved In Its Development

Leguizamo was the first person to teaseIce Age 6’s arrival, meaning he might be involved in its production. Having voiced Sid in the mainline series beforeBuck Wildrecast the character,it appears the next installment will be correcting Disney’s mistake by bringing the original voice actors back. This would be the perfect way for theIce Agefilm seriesto continue, using familiar voice actors to bring the series back to its roots.

The potential of anIce Age 6was first discovered in 2022, with a Disney+ production document forThe Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wildmentioning the possibility.

With Leguizamo teasing a new installment, it seems like Disney intends to correct their mistake by bringingIce Age’s original voice actors back into the fold. However, they’ll still need to come up with an engaging story with animation on par with Blue Sky Studiosfor another adventure in the franchise to work. Luckily, bringing back the original cast is a step in the right direction, which may prove Disney is serious about producing a strong follow-up for the franchise.
