Summary

Audiences at Disney’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event saw new footage ofAndorseason 2, and it might’ve revealed a plot twist that will makeAndorthe most important show in the entireStar Warsfranchise. After a thrilling and widely loved first season,Andorseason 2is coming sometime in 2025 and promises to continue raising the stakes. It was revealed at D23 thatAndorseason 2 will take place over four years, which will lead directly into the beginning ofRogue One: A Star Wars Story.

I’ve always been partial toStar Warstitles that involve the mysticism of the Force, butAndorwas a breath of fresh air and something that almost allStar Warsfans can get behind. While the story is rightfully regarded as one of the best in theStar Warsfranchise,Andor’s place in theStar Warstimelinecomplicates how the story can be told.Andoris set squarely in the Age of the Rebellion and, with so many titles unfolding simultaneously, I fearAndorcould have trouble balancing these stories without retconning them - especially if this theory is true.

Andor Cast & Character Guide

The cast of Andor, Star Wars' latest Disney+ series, is filled with faces both familiar and new. Here are all the characters & their actors explained.

Andor Will Show Mon Mothma’s Fallout With The Imperial Senate

Something We’ve Previously Only Heard About

In canon,Senator Mon Mothmaessentially defects from theGalactic Empireafter the Ghorman massacre. The Ghorman massacre took place in 2 BBY, which nicely lines up withAndor’s timeline for season 2.The massacre took place when the Empire sent troops to the planet Ghorman, where these troops slaughtered peaceful protesters. While this story has never been shown inStar Warsmedia before, it’s very likelyAndorwill be bringing it to life and showcasing the Empire’s brutality.

After the massacre, Senator Mothma publicly blamed the Emperor for the slaughter of the people of Ghorman, and her speech was seen on the holonet inStar Wars Rebelsseason 3. It’s been established that Mon Mothma was secretly working for the rebels essentially from the Empire’s founding, but this was the first time she stepped out and exposed herself to an Imperial attack. Following her speech implicating Palpatine,Mothma fled Coruscant and got to work trying to unify the different rebel cells into theRebel Alliancewe saw in the originalStar Warstrilogy.

Cassian Could Be The One To Save Her From Coruscant

Set Photos Support This Theory

IfAndoris looking to show the Ghorman massacre and Mothma’s speech, it only makes sense to bring these two characters together.

There are set photos fromAndorseason 2 that see Cassian Andor with Mon Mothma on what looks to be Coruscant. These photos likely show the aftermath of Mon Mothma’s Ghorman Massacre speech and Cassian is the one tasked with getting the senator off of the Imperial capital planet. IfAndoris looking to show the Ghorman massacre and Mothma’s speech, it only makes sense to bring these two characters together.Cassian is good at being a chameleon and playing a bunch of different parts when necessary, so having him infiltrate Coruscant seems like a good idea.

Much ofAndorseason 1 focused on Cassian and Mon Mothma operating separately; Mon Mothma was playing politics and trying to obtain funds for the rebels, while Cassian was finding his way as a rebel. The two never met, though both met with Luthen Rael, who would likely task Cassian with rescuing Mon Mothma from the Imperials on Coruscant. Considering the Ghorman massacre took place in 2 BBY andAndorseason 2 will take place over four years leading directly intoRogue One, this storyline would fit into either the second or third three-episode arc.

Cassian Andor’s Character History & Timeline, Explained

Between his self-titled Star Wars spin-off and Rogue One, Cassian Andor became one of the most crucial figures in the history of the Rebel Alliance.

Rebels Also Deals With Mon Mothma’s Defection

Star Wars Rebelsseason 3, episode 18 “Secret Cargo” features Hera Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, andZeb Orrelioslinking up with other rebel ships to help them secretly refuel. It’s later revealed that Mon Mothma was secretly on this other ship as she sought safety after her speech condemning Palpatine. Only three other rebels are seen in thatRebelsepisode, none of whom were Cassian Andor. However,Andor’s showrunner,Tony Gilroy, might look to retcon the events ofRebelsto include Cassianin Mon Mothma’s space travelafter leaving Coruscant.

This would certainly be a bit of a plot twist, asAndorseason 1 avoided the mention of Jedi and was a “boots on the ground” type of show. In fact, except for Cassian,Saw Gerrera, and Mon Mothma,Andorwas full of new characters.Bringing in a Jedi like Ezra Bridger would change the dynamic ofAndor, and I’m not sure if that’s wise. While I would love to see Ezra in anything because he’s one of my favorite characters of all time, it feels disingenuous to feature a Jedi inAndorwhen they were never mentioned in the first season.

Despite this, it seems like a missed opportunity to better connect Cassian Andor with otherStar Warscharacters we already know and love. It’s a bit of a slippery slope, but one I am confidentAndorcan navigate without losing touch with its core values. Seeing a pivotal moment in the Rebel Alliance’s history in the Ghorman massacre and connecting Cassian Andor to it seems like the right move forAndorseason 2.

Andorseason 2 is expected to release in early to mid 2025.
