Summary

The Wicked Powerswill be the final series in theShadowhunter Chronicles, and it promises to deliver an epicconclusion to Cassandra Clare’s fantasy books— thoughI’m a little worried about how it will pay off one warning fromThe Dark Artifices.Looking at theShadowhunterbooks in chronological order,The Dark Artificesis the series right beforeThe Wicked Powers. The latter will follow the younger generation of characters fromThe Dark Artifices, all while working in the rest of Clare’sShadowhunterheroes.

The stakes are likely to be higher than ever in this conclusion to theShadowhunter Chronicles, and the first book’s title —The Last King of Faerie— offers an idea of what the central conflict will be. There’s likely to be a major confrontation between the Shadowhunters and their enemies, whether it’s the demons they hunt or the Fae who detest them. ButThe Dark Artificesalso gives insight into what a major subplot of the upcoming trilogy will be. After one warning fromQueen of Air and Darkness,I’m worried about its leads.

Every Shadowhunter Book Series, Ranked From Worst To Best

Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter series all have their strengths, but which additions to the Shadowhunter Chronicles are the most memorable?

The Dark Artifices Never Pays Off Its Warning About Resurrecting Livvy

The Wicked Powers Will Likely Address Ty’s Actions

After Livvy Blackthorn perishes inLord of Shadows, her twin brother, younger sister, and Kit Herondale set out to resurrect her. While Kit decides against this later on, Ty manages to cast a spell to bring Livvy back to life. It doesn’t fully work, but Ty does resurrect her as a ghost inQueen of Air and Darkness. He does this despite warnings from Shade the warlock, which suggestcasting such a spell could “break the universe.“This is a sentiment Livvy repeats when she returns as a ghost and realizes what Ty has done.

Clare isn’t the type of author to leave such a huge thread hanging, and while I’m happy she’s likely to return to this storyline, I’m also concerned about Ty and the others.

Dark Artifices Collage

This warning isn’t delivered on duringThe Dark Artifices,as much of the final book focuses on Emma and Julian. However, with Ty, Kit, and Dru serving as the main characters ofThe Wicked Powers,it’s likely Clare will revisit the topic of resurrecting Livvy. Shade’s warning and Livvy’s response both imply that Ty’s actions will have major consequences. I’m Worried About What Will Happen To Ty & The Other Shadowhunters In The Wicked Powers

Fixing The Universe Could Require Sacrifices

It’s a good thing if Clare addresses Shade’s warning inThe Wicked Powers, but I have a feeling the pay-off for this storyline will leave readers devastated. Clare knows how to break hearts with herShadowhunternovels — in fact,The Mortal Instrumentsdoesn’t get enough creditfor the chain of tragedy it sets off — and righting Ty’s wrongs will probably require sacrifice. Breaking the universe is a massive concern, andI fear we haven’t seen the fallout of Livvy’s return just yet.

For the Shadowhunters to set things right, they may need to face threats they never have before. This means Clare is likely to kill off one or more of the saga’s major characters, and she’s already hinted at doing so. As much as I’d like their wedding to bethe final scene of theShadowhunter Chronicles,Clary has nightmares of Jace perishing duringThe Dark Artifices.Given Ty’s insistence on resurrecting Livvy, he could also find himself paying for what he’s done. This would put a tragic spin on his looming romance with Kit.

15 Harsh Realities About The Mortal Instruments Series, 10 Years After It Ended

The Mortal Instruments kicked off Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles, but there are some harsh realities about the series in hindsight.

How Turning Livvy Into A Ghost Could Impact The Wicked Powers' Main Characters

It Could Threaten The Entire Shadowhunter World

While Ty specifically could face consequences for bringing Livvy back,Shade’s warning suggests the fallout will impact the entire Shadowhunter world. The phrase “break the universe” implies that cheating death could break the very fabric of reality. If this is what happens duringThe Wicked Powers, more characters than Ty, Kit, and Dru will be affected. And the older generation of Shadowhunters may be called in to fix things, putting them in the line of fire once again.

This is especially worrisome, as I believed players like Clary, Jace, and their friends were safe once their series concluded. With Clare promising to give everyone a proper send-off inThe Wicked Powers, all bets are off. Ty, Kit, and Dru may bear the brunt of Livvy’s resurrection, but everyone will be in danger in the finalShadowhunter Chroniclestrilogy. Perhaps it’ll be enough to get Shadowhunters and Downworlders to work together — but I’m not holding my breath for a fully positive outcome.
