I’m doubtful thatStar Trek: Legacywill actually happen — at least, as long as one other particularStar Trekseries is still airing. Like many other fans, I was excited by the prospective newStar TrekseriesStar Trek: Picardseason 3set up that would follow the adventures of Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), Commander Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), and Ensign Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), aboard the newly rechristened USS Enterprise-G.Star Trek: Picardshowrunner Terry Matalas proposed the titleStar Trek: Legacy, and fan campaigns to getLegacyoff the ground were started, butthere’s been no word from Paramount aboutLegacyactually happening.
Instead, the next twonewStar Trekserieshave been announced, and neither of them areStar Trek: Legacy. First up is the 32nd-century-setStar Trek: Starfleet Academy, starring Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, several legacyStar Trekcharacters, and a new crop of fresh faces for theStar Trekfranchise. We knewStarfleet Academywas coming for a while, so that wasn’t much of a surprise. Paramount’s slate of San Diego Comic-Con announcements also included a brand-new, untitledStar Treklive-action comedy by writers Tawny Newsome and Justin Simien. Why wouldStar Trek: Legacyremain so suspiciously absent when Paramount knows fans want it?

Star Trek: Legacy - Everything We Know
Star Trek: Picard may have come to an end, but the potential adventures of Starfleet in the 25th century could still continue in Star Trek: Legacy.
Paramount+ Will Have Only One Star Trek Show About The USS Enterprise At A Time
Star Trek’s New Shows Don’t Replace Star Trek: Legacy
The most likely answer is that Paramount+ will only have oneStar Trekshow about the USS Enterprise at a time, regardless of which Enterprise it is. As long asStar Trek: Strange New Worldsis telling stories about Captain Christopher Pike’s (Anson Mount) Starship Enterprise,Star Trek: Legacywon’t be recounting the voyages of the USS Enterprise-G withCaptain Seven of Nine. This makes sense, sinceStrange New WorldsandStar Trek: Legacywould follow the classicStar TrekformatofStar Trek: The Original SeriesandStar Trek: The Next Generation, with episodic, self-contained stories about exploring the galaxy and morality plays.
Strange New WorldsandLegacywould have similar functions as flagship series.
Instead of being considered replacements forStar Trek: Legacy,Star Trek’s new shows fill different niches that some recently canceledStar Trekseries leave open.Lieutenant Beckett Mariner actressTawny Newsome’sStar Trekworkplace sitcomwill carry onStar Trek: Lower Decks' comedy mission.Star Trek: Starfleet Academyis likely to pick up whereStar Trek: Discoveryleft off inStar Trek’s 32nd century, and could continueDiscovery’s tradition of pushingStar Trek’s boundaries with experimental storytelling formats.Strange New WorldsandLegacywould have similar functions as flagship series for theStar Trekfranchise, so it makes sense to space them out.
A Possible 5 Seasons For Strange New Worlds Could Open The Door For Star Trek: Legacy
There’s Still New Star Trek To Look Forward To Before Star Trek: Legacy
Star Trek: Strange New Worldsmight last for only 5 seasons, at which point the door could open forStar Trek: Legacyto take its place asStar Trek’s flagship series. BecauseStar Trek: Strange New Worldsbegins in 2259, and the first season ofStar Trek: The Original Seriestakes place in 2265, it might seem like there’s a 5-year time limit onStrange New Worlds, but the timing ofStar Trek: Strange New Worldsis purposely ambiguous. Instead, the 5-year projection comes fromStar Trek: DiscoveryandStar Trek: Lower Decks' 5-year runs, which suggestStar Trekseries lasting 5 seasonsmight be the new franchise normal.
Star Trek: Picardseason 3 showrunner Terry Matalas is attached to Disney+’s Vision series for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Vision series is likely to be just a single season, like most other MCU TV shows, but it still ties up Matalas for some time before he could feasibly commit toStar Trek: Legacy.

Even ifStar Trek: Strange New Worldsends with season 5, that’s still another potential 3–5 years beforeStar Trek: Legacy. That may feel like a long time, but it’s nothing compared to the drought between the end ofStar Trek: Enterprisein 2005 andStar Trek: Discovery’s 2017 premiere —and we still have tons of newStar Trekto look forward to in the meantime. As my favorite of the newStar Trekseries, I hate the idea of sacrificingStrange New Worldsto getStar Trek: Legacy, but that might be how it has to be if there’s only room for one USS Enterprise show at a time.
