One of the greatest battles that I have ever seen fromIron Manand the Avengers was when they fought Bob Reynolds, also known as theSentry. At this point in the comics, the Sentry had been taken over by his evil alter ego, the Void, who wielded all the power he needed to end the world. This scenario may sound like an amazing climactic fight, but I’ve seen a few fans confused about how it actually ended.
The battle against the Void inSiege#4 by Brian Michael Bendis and Olivier Coipel is massive and bloody. While characters likeCaptain America, Thor, Luke Cage, and Captain Marvel are all pretty heavy hitters, they absolutely paled in comparison to the Void, which is whyI think some fans seem to find it odd how the Void was beaten so quickly. But after reading over the issue myself, it really wasn’t quick or easy.

The fight ends withIron Manessentially dropping a S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier on top of the Void, which pretty much ends the fight. While essentially dropping a giant battleship onto a creature that could literally tear Earth apart might seem a bit simple, it was actually much more complicated than that, andI think some fans are overlooking just how much went into that last stand.
Seige#4 by Brian Michael Bendis, Olivier Coipel, Danny Miki, Mark Morales, Laura Martin, and Chris Eliopoulos
The Avengers have a long and exhausting fight against the Void, and they’re easily beaten. It isn’t untilLoki steps up and uses his Norn Stonesthat the Avengers get their second wind. With their new Norn Stone Empowered abilities, the Avengers make their last stand against the Void and get some pretty good hits in. Thor calls down his lightning, and Captain America uses his enhanced shield to deal some pretty decent damage. While dropping a helicarrier on the Void might seem like a weak hit in comparison,it was just the final heavy hit in a long line of them.
The Avengers already got their hits in, and the damage was done.

Norn Stones are no joke:they have the ability to warp reality and essentially grant wishes. Norn Stones are the reasonDaredevil’s twin brother Mikewas able to become a real person. Being enhanced by the Norn Stones meant that everyone on the team, even Captain America with his shield, is capable of doing actual real damage to the Void. While the Void did find and seemingly kill Loki, the Avengers already got their hits in, and the damage was done. Tony dropping the helicarrier on top of the Void was just the final hit, and it was likely the biggest hit of them all.
The Helicarrier Nearly Obliterated Everything
S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarriers have some serious firepower on board, andsaying that Tony Stark simply “dropped one” on top of the Void to defeat him is a massive understatement. I think fans tend to forget that S.H.I.E.L.D. is one of the most advanced military organizations on the planet, and the organization’s helicarriers are some of the most heavily armored and weaponized vehicles to exist in the Marvel Universe. An average helicarrier is loaded with several nuclear warheads, as confirmed by Wolverine in theFear Itself: Wolverinestoryline. With nukes on board, no wonder the resulting explosion is so over the top.
Fear Itself: Wolverineby Seth Peck and Roland Boschi is part of a larger Marvel crossover event, which affected nearly the entire Marvel Universe.Fear Itself: Wolverineis available now both digitally and in a collected edition,Fear Itself: Wolverine / New Mutants, from Marvel Comics.

But even then, after being hit by Thor’s thunderand several Norn Stone-empowered Avengers, the Void still manages to survive having several nukes dropped on top of it.The helicarrier isn’t what ended the fight;it’s that Bob Reynolds finally managed to regain control over his body. Bob and the Void are in constant battle for who gets to be in control of their superpowered body. Those final hits from the Avengers were enough to give Bob the window that he needed to wrest control back from the Void, and that’s how the fight truly ends.
The Team Only Won Because Bob Gave Them the Window
Aftre Bob Reynolds manages to take back control and revert to his human form,he begs for the Avengers to kill him. They’re initially hesitant, wanting Bob to stand trial for his crimes. Unable to accept that, the Void begins to retake control, and Bob lashes out with the Void’s power. Thor, grieving over the death of Loki, immediately calls down another strike of lightning, killing Bob once and for all.
20 Marvel Characters Who Could Actually Defeat Sentry, Marvel’s Own Superman
The Sentry has a reputation as Marvel’s Superman for a reason, but despite that, he’s not invincible. Here are the 20 Marvel characters who beat him.
While some fans were disappointed by this final turn of events, I think it was a perfect ending to the fight. The Avengers hit the Void with everything they had, got empowered by reality warping stones, hadIron Mandropped several nukes on him, all before the team hit him at his most vulnerable, destroying theSentrywith a final blow. I honestly don’t think there’s any better way this battle could have ended.
