AfterSeveranceseason 1 gained so much success, my expectations are high for the next season, especially considering how other science fiction shows have dropped the ball as their stories have progressed.Severanceisa sci-fi thriller showthat began streaming on Apple TV+ in 2022. The series centers on a world where individuals can become “severed” from their work selves. Therefore, two versions of them exist: one inside the office and one in the outside world. In particular,Severancefollows Mark, a diligent worker who starts to question his joband life when a new opinionated employee arrives at the office.

I can’t wait forSeveranceseason 2simply because of how great the first season was.Severanceintroduced a unique world full of questions and shocking twists and turns. I was not only invested in understanding the world ofSeverance, but also in the characters who had such distinct personalities. On top of that, the sleek and strangely dull ambiance of the show made it even easier to binge. In this way, I’m eagerly awaiting where the show will go next. However,Severancecould join other sci-fi shows in having a disappointing season 2– with one specifically providing a particularly stark warning.

Severance Season 1 Recap: 10 Biggest Things To Remember Before Season 2

Severance season 2 has finally confirmed a release date, but enough time has passed since season 1 that it’s worth looking back at the biggest twists.

Severance Season 2 Must Avoid Westworld’s Critical Mistake

How Westworld Fumbled Season 2

Severanceseason 2 is a thrilling step forward for the sci-fi show, but it has the potential to crash and burn. Over the years, certain sci-fi shows have done incredibly well in their first season, but lost the magic in season 2. One such show isWestworld. The HBO series was praised in season 1 for its complex storytelling, colorful characters, and vivid Western setting. However, the quality of the show dropped significantly only one season later. In trying to raise the stakes and expand the world,Westworldseason 2 made the plot feel overly complicatedand the characters flatter.

…whenWestworldseason 2 tried to add even more complexity, it was overwhelming.

I believewhat went wrong withWestworldwas the show trying to get too big too fast. In general,Westworldintroduced a loaded plot. In the first season, audiences had to keep track of a large cast, a time-jumping plot, and a dystopian world. Once they understood the basics, the show really came to life. However, whenWestworldseason 2 tried to add even more complexity, it was overwhelming. One of the best parts ofWestworldwas its setting, so when the show moved to other locations, it made the story feel too vast and disconnected.

Severance’s Perfect First Season Creates A Massive Challenge For Its Future

What Could Happen If Severance Season 2 Disappoints

Overall, the fact that theSeveranceseason 1 endingwas so strong introduces major risks for season 2. Regardless of how other sci-fi series have performed,Severance’ssuccess automatically raises the stakes to a concerning level.Severanceseason 2 needs to recreate the strangeness, mystery, and excitementof the first season if it wants to keep the momentum going. I now have expectations that the showrunners need to meet. Other television series have certainly kept the energy up for all their seasons, but the danger is especially high between seasons 1 and 2.

Severanceseason 2 is slated for release on July 09, 2025.

The worst-case scenario is thatSeveranceseason 2 drops the ball and the show is canceled. It seems unlikely thatSeveranceseason 2 will fail so dramatically, but it is not out of the realm of possibility. Trying to make good seasons of TV one after the other isn’t always easy, and the pressure may get to showrunners. Without proper time or effort, a new season could easily fall flat or miss the mark. Thus, it is important thatSeveranceseason 2 gets enough time to be developed perfectly so that it matches up with the first season.

How Severance Season 2 Can Match The Quality Of Apple TV+’s Season 1

Severance Needs To Keep The Mystery Going

I think the most important aspect ofSeveranceis its mystery. Though the show is thrilling, creepy, and funny, its mystery is what keeps me and other viewers so invested. I’m dying to learn more about Lumon, its goats, and the story behind Mark’s wife. There are also aspects ofSeverance’sworld that have barely been explored at all. In this way,I think it is pivotal thatSeverancemaintains its sense of mystery.Like season 1,Severanceseason 2 needs to answer some questions, but keep up the veil of mystery so we continue wanting more.

I also believe thatSeverance’sstrangeness is equally pivotal. The show stands out from other sci-fi series because of its specific premise and design. IfSeveranceseason 2 can keep audiences guessing with its odd details and blunt design choices, then I’m sure the season will do just fine. For me to stay interested inSeverance, all I need is another dose of quirky characters trying to uncover deeply buried secrets.
