Alongside the more fantastical livestock available inStardew Valley, like dinosaurs and slimes, are the normal herds of cows, sheep, pigs, goats, and the most classic of farm animals: the chicken. While most chickens come in a basic white or brown, you can also unlock a special type of blue chicken. The only way to access this unique breed is to build a relationship with one eligible bachelor in Pelican Town.
Bluechickens are a unique breed inStardew Valleythat can live on the farm alongside their brown and white friends. While the blue chickens don’t provide any unique items like void chickens, they add fun to the farm with their special shade and fancy tail feathers. Unlike other animals, unlocked by building and upgrading buildings, theblue chicken can only be obtained through friendship.

How To Get A Blue Chicken (& How Many Hearts You Need With Shane)
A Good Friend Is The Only Way To Gain A Special Chicken
The only way togain access to the special blue chickens is by befriending Shane, one of the most unfriendly characters living in Pelican Town. While it may initially seem very difficult to get to know Shane since his early dialogue frequently asks you to go away or why you’re even trying to talk to him, he’s one of the easier villagers to win over.Shane has a lot of loved gifts, which earn the most friendship points when gifted to him, that are available to buy right away.
You don’t have to forage, mine, or create artisan goods for Shane since almost everything he loves is available at the Stardrop Saloon.

The best way to get through to Shane is to give him his most loved gifts, which areHot Peppers,Pizza,Pepper Poppers, and Beer, though you might not want to give Shane any alcohol once seeing more of his heart events. Since building a friendship with Shane is key to earning a blue chicken, you will definitely want to give him a gift on his birthday.
Stardew Valley’s Most Convenient Upgrade Comes Way Too Late In The Game
Gaining access to various shortcuts around Pelican Town is a huge advantage, but it comes far too late in Stardew Valley for players to fully enjoy.
Another easy way to befriend Shane is to plant lots of Hot Peppers in Summerand save a portion to give to him. That way, you aren’t constantly dropping your hard-earned cash at the saloon every week. Since his birthday is so early in the year, Spring 20, it’s important to give him something, and it’s easiest to head over to the Stardrop Saloon and buy a pizza for Shane since Hot Peppers haven’t been in season yet (at least for a new save).

After befriending Shane, you will need to earn at least eight hearts of friendship with himto unlock the special blue chickens. Thankfully, you don’t have to marry Shaneto access the chickens; you may only witness the heart event. In this heart event cutscene, you will see Shane with his niece, Jas, in Marnie’s coop while Shane tends to his flock of blue chickens and his favorite chicken, Charlie. Shane will discuss his goals and how he wants to pass along his knowledge of caring for chickens to Jas. After this heartwarming scene is over, you will have the ability to purchase blue chickens.
What Happens If You Don’t Get A Blue Chicken From Marnie
There’s Only A 25 Percent Chance Of Blue For Each Chicken Purchase
Like other farm animals, blue chickens can be purchased fromMarnie inStardew Valley. After you have witnessed Shane’s eight-heart event, purchasing a chicken will now have a 25% chance of giving a blue chicken. There’s no way to guarantee a blue chicken when buying one from Marnie, but thankfully, it is easy to try again for the 25% chance.
After 13 Years, Stardew Valley’s Success Proves It’s More Than A “Harvest Moon Clone”
Stardew Valley might be iconic today, but it was once written off as a “Harvest Moon clone,” and its success is a lesson for other clone type games.
You can simply cancel your chicken transaction and try again until you get a blue chicken. The way to know the chicken’s color is in the animal naming screen, as the game will ask what you want to name your new white/brown/blue chicken. Since it tells you exactly what color the chicken will be, you can back out of the transaction and try again until the naming screen says blue chicken.
Unfortunately, there’sno way to obtain blue chickens except buying them from Marnie. Blue chickens don’t produce special blue eggs, so you can’t use the egg incubator for another blue chicken. Any egg from a blue chicken will be white or brown and will thus produce aStardew Valleystandard white or brown chicken. While Shane’s heart event did allow you access to the blue chickens, it didn’t pass along Shane’s secret to creating a blue chicken.
