The Gorgestars Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller recall how their friendship helped them play snipers sent on a mysterious mission in their upcoming action-horror-romance movie. Fresh off of playing the sharpshooting Furiosa in this summer’sMad Maxprequel movie, Taylor-Joy again plays a character with sniping skills in directorScott Derrickson’s genre-bending new movie.Top Gun 2star Teller joins Taylor-Joy in Apple TV+’sThe Gorge, which hits the streamer on August 04, 2025.
Speaking exclusively toScreen Rantfrom this weekend’s CCXP,The Gorge’s leads discussed how their long-standing friendship played into their performances in the movie, which sees their sniper characters forming an unlikely romantic bond over the course of the story. Taylor-Joy talked about how she’s long wanted to work with Teller:

Most excited, I have to say, is working with this one. Miles and I have known each other for a really long time, loved each other for a really long time, and I’m a really big fan of his acting, so I wanted to work with you.
Teller discussed the advantage to having a prior relationship with Taylor-Joy, while praisingThe Gorge’s script by Zach Dean:

I can echo that, absolutely. I think Anya is just a phenomenal actress, and we had known each other coming into this, and I’ve never really had that experience before where I already felt like I had a bond with somebody going into a story. And then script wise, I just thought it was just highly original. Nobody’s ever seen anything like this. I had never read something like this, and I thought that was going to be a lot of fun, and I knew we were going to get to showcase a lot of different skills, and there’s a lot of different genres in this thing.
Taylor-Joy recalled how she and Teller’s performances were aided by their familiarity and comfort-level with each other:
No, no, we did, at the very beginning. We had all the best intentions that we really wanted to be there for each other, and for each other’s coverage. And then the first day I showed up and Miles was in his tower and they put me on a pulley thing and I was like, “This is just not going to [work], we can’t see each other.” But yeah, I think having that relationship was just invaluable because you have a shorthand and you’re able to sort of understand the way the other person moves, and that helps in every way with the weapons, even. By the time the two of us were fighting together, there’s just such an awareness of each other that was really fun and really useful, honestly.
What This Means For The Gorge
Taylor-Joy And Teller Star In A Genre-Bending Love Story
Furiosastar Taylor-Joy andTop Gun2’s Teller both continue exploring the action-movie space withThe Gorge, but this time the elements are shaken up, thanks to a script that ticks a lot of different genre boxes, and according to Teller, gives him and his co-star a chance to showcase a lot of different skills. Taylor-Joy highlights how her pre-existing rapport with Teller made it easier for them to deal with difficult scenes where they weren’t sharing the screen together, while also aiding them in filming their shared action scenes.
It was likely very helpful for director Derrickson to have a pair of co-leads who know each other well, and thus had a solid foundation upon which to build their on-screen relationship. Taylor-Joy and Teller’s chemistry will no doubt be a major factor in determining whetherThe Gorgedelivers as an off-beat, genre-blending experience.
Our Take On Taylor-Joy And Teller’s Potential Gorge Chemistry
Actors Liking Each Other Doesn’t Mean They’ll Make A Great On-Screen Couple
The love story angle ofThe Gorgeis front-and-center, at least in the eyes ofTaylor-Joy, who in an interview withColliderhighlighted the movie’s “genre-less” nature, while singling out the romantic element as a key attraction when she signed on for the project. But whether Taylor-Joy and Teller are actually convincing as two people who fall in love on-screen is yet to be seen.
The Gorgealso stars Sigourney Weaver, Sope Dirisu and William Houston
Taylor-Joy and Teller seem convinced that their prior relationship made it easier for them to play the movie’s unlikely romantic pair. Perhaps they’re right, and their real-life bond informed their performances in a positive way. Acting chemistry is a tricky thing, however. Actors can have a positive relationship in real life, and still fail to mesh on-screen. Conversely, performers who have an antagonistic relationship in real life can have sizzling movie chemistry. It’s all a dice-roll, and hopefullyThe Gorgesaw those dice land the right way for its leads.
