Though he has since become one ofStar Wars’most popular characters thanks to the success ofThe Mandalorian,Grogustill has quite a mysterious background. Grogu, also known to many as “Baby Yoda,” was a surprise addition to the story ofThe Mandalorian, where he made his debut at the end of theStar WarsTV show’s first episode. With his inclusion in the story kept a secret up until that point, Grogu’s first appearance was even more remarkable, and he’s quickly become a belovedStar Warscharacter ever since then.
Years later, Grogu is considered to be one ofStar Wars’best characters, if only because of his richStar Warshistory. Though Grogu’s story inThe Mandaloriancovers largely unexplored territory, the little one’s connections go back quite far in theStar Warstimeline. From his origins to his species, Grogu becomes only more important the longer his story goes on. Here’s everything you need to know aboutDin Djarin’s adorable yet powerful companion, beginning with his richStar Warsorigins.

Grogu Is The Third Member Of Yoda’s Species To Appear In Star Wars Canon
This Species Is Still Unknown
Unfortunately, there’s still little that’s known about Grogu’sStar Warsspecies. Known primarily asYoda’s species, there are still very fewStar Warscharacters who look like Grogu.Yoda, Yaddle, and Grogu himself are the only namedStar Warscharacters to be a part of this extremely rare species, though their individual stories can help to inform more about their kind - particularly their knack for Force-sensitivity.
How Old Was Grogu When Each Star Wars Movie Happened
Grogu may still be considered a child, but he’s experienced a lot in that time. How old was he during the major events of the Star Wars movies?
Grogu’s species lives for many, many years, with Yoda living to be just over 900 years old before dying peacefully inReturn of the Jedi. As a result, their species ages slowly, hence why Grogu is a 50-year-old baby inThe Mandalorianseason 1.The species also seems to have a naturally highmidi-chlorian count, which is what causes so many of them to not only be Force-sensitive, but also be great candidates for the Jedi Order. Their planet of origin, however, is still one ofStar Wars’greatest mysteries.

Grogu Was A Jedi Youngling Raised At The Coruscant Jedi Temple
He Learned The Ways Of The Force Early On
While Grogu’sStar Warsstory on the screen began with Din Djarin finding him in a safehouse on the planet Arvala-7, many years after the fall of the Jedi Order, Grogu’s in-universe story started long before that. It was confirmed by Ahsoka Tano inThe Mandalorianseason 2 that Grogu once lived at theCoruscant Jedi Temple, where he was raised as a youngling until he was of proper age to continue training as a Jedi Padawan. Unfortunately, however,Order 66was enacted before then, which prohibited Grogu from getting any proper Jedi training.
Grogu was 50 years old at the start ofThe Mandalorian, which means thathe was born almost 10 years before the events ofStar Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. It’s likely, then, that Grogu was already at the Jedi Temple during that movie, and all the other prequel trilogy movies as well. Obviously, Grogu managed to get away from the Temple safely during Order 66, which makes him one of the fewJedi Order 66 survivorsin the entire galaxy.

How Grogu Escaped Order 66
Grogu Got Off Coruscant Unharmed
When Order 66 was enacted, Grogu was immediately ushered to safety by various Jedi Masters, many of whom tragically lost their lives defending Grogu. When members of Anakin Skywalker’s 501st Legion were in pursuit of Grogu, he was sent down in a lift to theJedi Kelleran Beq, who then took over for the others in defending the youngling.Kelleran managed to get the two of them on a speeder, and he evaded enemy pursuit long enough to get them to a Naboo landing platform, where a ship from the Naboo Royal Navy was awaiting them.
What Happened Between Order 66 & Grogu’s Appearance In The Mandalorian
Grogu’s Memories Go Dark
Kelleran was able to pilot both himself and Grogu to safety, though it’s as yet unknown where exactly they were headed. The Mandalorianseason 3 was the last property to show Grogu’s Order 66 escape, and that flashback leaves off on the view of hyperspace from Coruscant. The context for what else happened in Grogu’s life, however, has been provided by Ahsoka Tano.
Grogu’s 10 Greatest Force Feats (So Far)
Grogu may be tiny, but he’s also mighty, especially with the Force. Here are his greatest Force feats thus far in The Mandalorian franchise.
When she confirmed that Grogu had been raised in the Temple, Ahsoka also told Din Djarin that Grogu’s memories went dark between his Order 66 escape and his first meeting with the Mandalorian. It can be assumed, then, that the Empire was in full pursuit of Grogu for years, which left him in the hands of various mercenaries and more. At some point, Grogu had to have fallen away from Kelleran’s care, and ended up with whoever the Niktos on Arvala-7 were working for. This, like Grogu’s species, is still a mystery.

Grogu Has Now Been Adopted As A Mandalorian Foundling
No Longer Is He A Jedi
This Jedi past is now far behind Grogu, who is taking up the Mandalorian way rather than that of the Jedi. After being on the run with Din Djarin for a year or so, Grogu decided to finish his Jedi training with Luke Skywalker, but his heart was never truly in it. Torn between the life of a Jedi and a life with his father figure, Luke presented Grogu with a choice, and the little one chose the path of a Mandalorian. Now, Din Djarin has officially adopted him as his own, providing Grogu with a brand-new name: Din Grogu.
Din Djarin
Din Djarin was once a lone bounty who has since tasked himself with raising his adopted son and Mandalorian apprentice, Grogu. Born on Aq Vetina and raised on Concordia by the Mandalorian faction the Children of the Watch, Din is an orphan and Mandalorian foundling who has risked both his life and his Mandalorian Creed to protect Grogu. Djarin has become an important part of the galaxy’s fight against the Imperial Remnant that lingers in the wake of the Empire’s fall, as he is now working under-the-table for the fledgling New Republic’s rangers.
From here on out,Din will be taking Grogu on his Mandalorian apprentice journeys across the galaxy. These, based onThe Mandalorianseason 3’s ending, will likely be the “bounty hunting” jobs that Din seeks to complete on behalf of Captain Carson Teva and theNew Republicrangers. Grogu will be assisting his father with these jobs during their adventures in theupcomingThe Mandalorian & Grogumovie.
How Powerful Is Grogu?
Grogu Wields The Force Well
Grogu has already proven himself to be quite powerful in the Force. The little one has made use of nine differentlight side and dark side Force powersso far in bothThe MandalorianandThe Book of Boba Fett. Grogu has gone up against creatures more than ten times his size, from mudhorns to rancors, and has lived to tell the tale. Though he may be small,he is immensely powerful in the Force.
Grogu’s 9 Force Powers In Star Wars So Far
Grogu’s Force powers in The Mandalorian keep growing stronger every season. He’s used at least 9 different Force powers so far, with more to come.
Despite this, Grogu’s training with Luke Skywalker has taught him how to restrain his power and use the proper Force techniques in battle. Rather than risking a fall to the dark side by utilizing powers such as Force choke, Grogu now focuses on unarming his opponents and outsmarting them with abilities like Force speed and Force jump. Grogu showcased these new abilities in his battle with Din andBo-Katan Kryzeagainst Moff Gideon, whereGroguwas absolutely essential to the survivor of both his father and Mandalore’s ruler.

Grogu
Grogu is a former Jedi youngling who is now training as a Mandalorian apprentice under his adopted father, Din Djarin. A survivor of Order 66, Grogu was hunted by the Empire for his blood amidst their cloning experimentation. Rescued by Din after initially being his bounty, Grogu went on to be trained briefly by Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Padawan, but has ultimately chosen the path of the Mandalorians instead to remain with his father. Grogu is now traversing the galaxy with Din to fight the Imperial Remnant and learn the Mandalorian Way.
