Mamoru Oshii Reflects on the 4K Remaster
A Cyberpunk Classic Reborn
The film’s striking visuals, created by Production I.G, blend CGI and traditional hand-drawn animation, and the 4K remaster enhances these intricate details for an even more immersive experience. To mark the release, writer-director Mamoru Oshii shared his thoughts on the new transfer and the film’s creation:
“As we release the 4K remastered version ofInnocence, I watched the film all the way through for the first time in 20 years… It was beautifully and meticulously done, and I’m very pleased with how it turned out. Back then, we spent years working with hand-drawn animation and CG, but we couldn’t fully reproduce all the intricate details in the final footage. However, with this high-resolution digital scan, the level of precision has significantly improved.

It also brought back memories of that time—I was in a pretty bad state back then (laughs). AfterInnocencewas completed, I was bedridden for about two months, unable to stand. That energy, that turmoil, is embedded in this film. To create something truly beautiful, you have to overcome something. Watching it again, I felt a deep-seated passion, or perhaps a kind of decadent allure, in the film. I hope everyone will take the opportunity to see it in theaters.”
