The third show in the CBSFBIfranchise,FBI: International, returned for its fourth season in late 2024, but the network has canceled it before season 5. Created by TV maven Dick Wolf and Derek Haas,Internationaltakes the procedural overseas and follows the FBI’s elite “Fly Team” headquartered in Budapest as they neutralize threats to the U.S. abroad. The show represents a major shift for the popular franchise, and moves the exciting action to brand-new shores which opens the door for unique storytelling opportunities. Regardless of the cases,Internationalstill invests time in its roster of characters as well.
Like all of Dick Wolf’s TV shows, theFBIfranchise seemingly sprung up overnight, and what started as a single series has blossomed into a trilogy.FBI: Internationalis the third and most recent spinoff, though it is quickly approaching a half-decade on the air already. Never afraid to take big risks with its characters and storytelling,Internationalhas set itself apart from its domestic counterparts, and this made the youngestFBIshow’s future seem just as bright as its predecessors. Unfortunately, CBS canceledInternationalandMost Wantedin early 2025.

CBS Trims The FBI Franchise Down To One Series
development will continue on the upcoming spinoff,FBI: CIA.
Even though theFBIfranchise was never as strong as competitors likeNCISorLaw & Order, the multi-series universe was still one of CBS' biggest hits. That’s why it was quite surprising when the network decided tocancelInternationalandMost Wantedin the early months of 2025.FBI: Internationalwon’t return for season 5, though the flagship series has already been renewed for the eighth and ninth seasons. On top of that, development will continue on the upcoming spinoff,FBI: CIA.
No reason for the dual cancelation has been given, andit’s hard to say that low viewership numbers are the deciding factor. WhileFBIstill reigns supreme with over 6 million average viewers, bothInternationalandMost Wanteddrew in a healthy 4 million audience members on average. Even during their final seasons, the two spinoffs maintained audiences that are unheard of for other series. There are currently no plans to shop the series to other networks, and the overall plan for theFBIfranchise is currently unclear.

The Fly Team Could Have Returned In Season 5
Cast shakeups are nothing new in long-running procedurals, butthe complexion ofFBI: Internationalchanged completely going into season 4.The departure of Luke Kleintank as Scott Forresterand Heida Reed as Jamie Kellett left the show in a precarious spot for the first time, and the cast was forever shaken up. With that in mind, season 5’s cast would have presumably been a lot more stable, and one expected return was that of newcomer Jesse Lee Soffer as SSA Wesley “Wes” Mitchell, since he had just joined the show in season 4.
Other mainstays would have probably been back as well, including Carter Redwood as Special Agent Andre Raines and Vinessa Vidotto as Special Agent Cameron Vo. It was expected that Eva-Jane Willis would be back as Europol Agent Megan “Smitty” Garretson, alongside Christina Wolfe as Agent Amanda Tate. The series also employed a host of special guest stars, but it’s impossible to guess who that could have been.

I Truly Believe FBI: International Is The Best Show In The Franchise (Yes, Even Better Than FBI)
FBI: International is the newest member of the FBI series of shows. It is also the best show out of all three entries in the FBI franchise.

What Was Next For The Fly Team?
With major cast changes altering the show’s trajectory going into season 4,it’s hard to predict exactly what would have happened inFBI: Internationalseason 5. Presumably, many of the threads that carried over between seasons 3 and 4 would have continued, but it’s impossible to know what would have happened. With the show’s cancelation coming mid-season, it’s highly likely that any ideas introduced in the fourth season will lead nowhere. It’s possible that storylines could continue in the main series, but that is highly unlikely.
