Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Deadpool & Wolverine

Summary

There are some very good reasons why anMCUreturn for Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool feels inevitable, as well as for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. Following the release of 2024’sDeadpool & Wolverine, several clues and signs point to an ongoing future for the red and yellow duo in the coming years, especially as the current Multiverse Saga comes to a close. Not only are there teases within the new film itself, but there are also bigger reasons why Wade and Logan’s returns are more than likely based on how the new MCU feature has been received.

In the MCU’s newest feature focused on Deadpool’s mission to save theFox universe and timeline of Earth-10005, Wade Wilson battles the MCU’s Time Variance Authority while forcing a team-up with none other than Wolverine, the only one who can prevent his world and those he cares about from being erased from existence. This leads to a multiversal misadventure of epic proportions, one that has quickly risen as one of the better MCU projects in the last few years. To that end, here are some of the biggest reasons why Deadpool and Wolverine’s return to the MCU feels like a foregone conclusion.

Deadpool & Wolverine: 100 Marvel Easter Eggs & References Explained

Deadpool & Wolverine quite literally has over 100 different Easter eggs, references, and cameos galore. Here are all the ones we found.

8Deadpool Hasn’t Joined The MCU Yet

But He Was Invited By The TVA

At the beginning ofDeadpool & Wolverine,Deadpool is taken from his reality by the Time Variance Authority’s Mister Paradox who offers Wade the opportunity to permanently move to the primary MCU reality of Earth-616 (aka the Sacred Timeline). This was something that came down from Paradox’s “superiors” who believe Wade has some sort of higher purpose to fulfill in the MCU. While Deadpool was initially thrilled to finally become"a hero among heroes", the other shoe drops with the reveal that only he was being offered this opportunity while his loved ones were set for imminent deletion with the rest of the Fox universe.

Naturally, this prompts Deadpool’s plan to replace the Fox universe’s Wolverine who died inLoganwith a new variant, something that would theoretically save and stabilize his home reality. This is exactly what happens by the movie’s end, meaning Deadpool never makes a permanent move to the main MCU. As such,it certainly leaves the door open for Wade to one day make a return to the main MCU to fulfill his mysterious higher purpose.

7We Still Don’t Know Why Thor Was Crying Over Deadpool

Ryan Reynolds Knows Why…

During Paradox’s offer to Wade, one of the monitors at the TVA features a moment in the not-so-distant future whereThor is crying and holding Deadpool. Naturally, Deadpool becomes obsessed and demands to know why Thor was crying, one of the movie’s best-running jokes. However, the reason for the God of Thunder’s tears is left a mystery by the film’s end.

It stands to reason that Thor and Deadpool’s tragic embrace will likely be revealed at a later date in the MCU. It’s quite likely that it could be an upcoming scene in the nextAvengersmovies that are set to culminate the Multiverse Saga. Either way, Ryan Reynolds has teased online that he does indeed know why Thor was crying during this future MCU moment.

6More Anchor Beings Will Likely Emerge In The MCU

Who’s The Anchor of Earth-616?

The reason Wolverine is so crucial to saving the Fox universe is that the original Logan served as that reality’s “anchor being”.A new multiverse term in the MCU, anchor beings are focal points that are so important that reality begins to gradually fall apart once they’re gone. This is why Deadpool was in search of a new Wolverine variant to serve as a replacement anchor for his world.

To that end, it’s more than likely that anchor beings will continue to play a key role in future MCU movies, perhaps being the only ones to save the multiverse from its expected collapse. While this could certainly include Wolverine in a dynamic MCU return, it’s not hard to imagine other anchors potentially joining him, including thecurrently unknown anchor being of Earth-616.

5B-15 Teased A Fox Universe Future For Deadpool and Wolverine

Their Work’s Just Getting Started

Discovering Paradox’s unsanctioned actions with the Time Ripper,Loki’sB-15 makes an appearance inDeadpool & Wolverine’sfinal act. Having saved the Fox universe from Cassandra Nova and the reality-ending device, it’s confirmed by B-15 that Wade and Logan successfully stabilized Earth-10005. However,B-15 also confirms that she has a feeling Wade and Logan’s work is just getting started, teasing future adventures for the best bubs.

4Deadpool & Wolverine Teased Secret Wars Connections

More Clues Beyond The Comic Book Cover

Remarkably,Deadpool & Wolverinedoes feature a major tease forAvengers: Secret Warsas seen in the Void at the End of Time. When Wade and Logan first arrive in the multiverse’s landfill, a half-buried comic issue is seen next to Deadpool. Upon close inspection, it’s none other than2015’sSecret Wars #5, a direct tease that Deadpool and Wolverine could very well make a future appearance in theAvengerscrossoverthat’s expected to epically culminate the Multiverse Saga following the precedingAvengers: Doomsday.

However, the comic cover is even more significant when considering the movie’s other teases for the future. This includes Wade’s higher purpose and the future scene with a crying Thor. However, the simple fact that Deadpool and Wolverine will still be around in the stabilized Earth-1005 is a great sign in and of itself.

3Deadpool & Wolverine Has Broken Too Many Box Office Records

A Much-Needed Win For The MCU

The box office recordsDeadpool & Wolverinehas broken are truly staggering and quite impressive. Having the eighth-best opening weekend of all time,Deadpool & Wolverineis also the best opening weekend domestically for an R-rated movie ever. Having already earned $900 million, the latest MCU movie is mere days away from earning a billion dollars at the international box office.

By box office numbers alone,Deadpool & Wolverinetruly is a major win for Marvel Studios, one they no doubt will want to capitalize on by bringing these characters back in some shape or form. After all, Deadpool says himself in the new sequel that Wolverine is entering the MCU at"a bit of a low point", a self-referential joke about Marvel’s recent missteps. It follows that they would naturally want to go all in on bankable successes going forward (like bringing Wade and Logan back).

2Ryan Reynolds And Hugh Jackman Both Want A Spider-Man Team-Up

Who Doesn’t Love Peter Parker?

Nothing has yet been confirmed regarding a potentialDeadpool 4/Deadpool & Wolverine 2.However, it is worth noting that both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman have expressed a desire to team up with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Furthermore, directorShawn Levy has also voiced his desire to do aDeadpool & Spider-Manmovie, an exciting feature that could bring Wade Wilson and Peter Parker’s established friendship in the comics to life on the big screen.

That being said, a team-up between Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man through multiversal means would be an absolute nostalgia train. Rather than being in their own feature, a Jackman/Maguire team-up could also happen within something like the upcoming Secret Wars crossover. At any rate, wanting to team up with any version of Spidey at least communicates a desire from multiple parties regarding future MCU returns.

1Deadpool & Wolverine Is One Of The Best Multiverse Saga Movies

A Major Success The MCU Can Build On

When looking at the entireMultiverse Sagaas a whole,it’s undeniable thatDeadpool & Wolverineis one of the Multiverse Saga’s best projects so far. It’s certainly joined the ranks of other multiverse movie standouts, such asSpider-Man: No Way Homeand Loki. Featuring new multiverse concepts, exciting variant appearances, and an emotional core at the heart of the story, it certainly does feel like a prime recipe for success.

The multiverse hasn’t always been a hit in the MCU, despite the irony of it being such a key focus of their current saga in the wake ofAvengers: Endgame. As such, it would make sense for Marvel Studios to likely be looking for ways to expand on what has clearly worked so well inDeadpool & Wolverine, including bringing back its stars for new adventures. The dynamics between Deadpool and Wolverine are too good to pass up for future projects, including what they could bring to other characters and elements in the MCU proper.
