The remake was announced as part of the June 2024 Nintendo Direct showcase along withfurther remakes of the full Erdrick trilogy that will be released in 2025, bringing the titles to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store.
A new press release confirmedplayers will be able to experience never-before-seen story episodes starring Ortega, the protagonist’s father, inDragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakeas well as formidable new bosses. Ortega is a hero in his own right and the one who attempted to slay the archfiend Baramos before the game’s protagonist, and while he did appear a few times during the original version of the game - with the intro of the NES and Game Boy versions of the game showing his battle atop a volcano - he wasn’t playable, making these new segments in the remake even more of a welcome surprise for players.

As well as the addition of these new “Episodes” which will show more of Ortega’s original journey and provide more of an insight into the conflict that preceded the game’s main campaign, the press release revealed thatthere will also be “formidable new bosses” added throughout the story.These new foes won’t just be appearing in Ortega’s new episodes, but will add plenty of new challenges to the overall game.
AlthoughDragon Quest III HD-2D Remakehas been referred to as “a stunning reimagining of the beloved masterpiece,” rather than drastically changing the story,these seem to be additions that expand upon the game that players are already familiar with.The announcement also came with screenshots that provided a further look at locations such as Ibis, a kingdom surrounded by miles of desert, that has been brought to stunning new life by the remake’s vibrant HD-2D graphics.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remakelaunches on Nov. 14, with pre-orders available now for both the Standard physical or digital editions andthe Collector’s Editionon all available platforms. Anyone who pre-orders the title will also receive a free Trouble-Free Travel Kit in the game, which contains a collection of in-game items to help get ahead earlier in the adventure.
